What are those buckets that go up in the air called on utility trucks called?

and why when they park in there parking lots, when the day is over do they put the buckets up in the air. My dad said it so homeless people dont sleep in them, but I dont believe him.

I've always called them "Cherry pickers". they leave it up to keep people from climbing into them.

Cherry pickers.

They do that for safety reasons and liability..

Hubby just calls them bucket trucks. They use them for Time Warner Cable, but since he works for a contracting company for them, he doesn't get one of those. Instead he has to use a ladder. They make him work rain, snow, sleet, hail. I'm waiting for him to fall of the ladder, break his back, and get electrocuted. We will be rich.

I think your dad is kind of on the right track..they probably just don't want any people going into them though, not just homeless.

Cherry Pickers or Apple Pickers or Buckets is what we've called them. I was told they are put up in the air for minimal hydraulic wear and tear and cracking. If they aren't bent for a long period of time the hoses and cables don't have as much strain put on them.

We have them here at work and just call them bucket trucks, lol. I think leaving the bucket up is for safety and liability purposes.

Oh, I know this one well. My husband is a utility worker. They are simply called buckets... hence the name of the trucks, "Bucket Trucks". They keep theirs inside when not in use. But the ones that do have to leave them out, it is required by law to leave the buckets up. Your dad is somewhat correct. It's so that people don't try to climb up them, for liability purposes.

Rosie... I know how you feel. Even though my husband does use a bucket truck, he is still in danger every time. There are some high voltage power lines up there, which they work with "live". One wrong move and you're a goner.

I've always heard them referred to as buckets, to be honest! And I think it would make sense that they don't want homeless people or animals getting in there, it could be a liability.

I believe they are called manlifts.
