What can i do to get my car ready for the winter? Driving tips?

I have a 2002 chrysler sebring and will be moving to Ohio. This is the first time i'll be driving in Snowy/ ICY conditons. Any tips on how to get the car ready and how to drive safely?

Well snowy or icy conditions should always be handled with extreme care. Below are a few tips that can help you to drive the roads in a safe manner.

* Drive with your headlights on.
* Drive for conditions. Don't get overconfident with four-wheel drive. It won't help you stop any faster.
* Winter road conditions often result in longer stopping distances. Drivers should allow additional room between their vehicles and others.
* Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots. These all have potential to develop black ice that makes driving hazardous.
* Avoid abrupt actions while steering, braking or accelerating to lessen the chances of losing control of the vehicle.
* Look farther ahead in traffic. Actions by other drivers will alert you to problems and give you extra time to react.
* Trucks take longer to stop. Don't cut in front of them.
* Avoid using cruise control or overdrive. Don't let your car make a bad decision for you.
* Stopping on snow and ice without skidding requires extra time and distance. If you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it. If you don't have anti-lock brakes, gently pump the pedal. Either way, give yourself plenty of room to stop.

One final piece of advice is to make sure that you get your tires upgraded if they are not already ready for winter conditions. Many like to purchase snow tires for their vehicles, this enhances your car and wheel traction.

Make sure you have good tires, they should have a decent or better tread and they should have "M+S" on the side of the tire to indicate Mud and Snow capable. Make sure you have a blanket, some handwarmers, flashlight, maybe some non-perishable food items in case you get stranded, etc. Also, when you are going down a hill and it's icy, snowy, or both, don't use any brakes. Instead of brakes you should shift your car to Neutral. Doing this will let your car roll freely, it will keep you motor from making the tires spin. If you get stranded or stuck, turn on the hazards, etc. Just use common sense, have you phone with you, and don't freak out.
