What can we do to get dangerous old people off the roads?

I am a firm believer that road tests should be mandatory for anyone over age 60 and should be mandated every 5 years until age 70, then they should be every 2 years after that. Too many older people are on the road with outdated glasses prescripts and as much as being a cautious driver is safe, it is not when you enter into oncoming traffic like a bat out of hell and then slow to a turtle crawl with someone riding up your ***. As much as you don't want to take away the elderly's ability to have independence, it should not come at the sake of other people's safety. That's just my thoughts however.

Here we go again...always the "old people" thing. Just who do you people think you are? Don't you think that one day if you're lucky you will be old too? Wonder how you'll feel about taking "old folks" off the highway then, eh? I'm 58 years old and drive truck about 100,000 miles a year. Want to know what I think? Who do I think should be taken off the road? All young kids that have friends in their cars. All 30 somethings that do office work on their lap tops while driving down the highway. All women that put on make-up when driving. All people that talk on cell phones when driving. Kids that sit reclined so far back they can barely see over the steering wheel. 20 somethings on crotch rockets. Soccer moms with kids on their way to ball practice and are late. See? Inattentive and bad driving is not age related. I sincerely hope that all young people today live to be the ripe old age of 85...just so some day in the future some young kid will tell them "damn you're old! We need to pass laws to regulate you!"

I AGREE AS WELL, HOW DO WE GET ALL THOSE DANGEROUS, STUPID TEENAGERS OFF THE ROAD AS WELL.

I agree with Tommy 100% I am 58 also and can out drive any teenager and I am a good driver, I don't take chances and I like Tommy have to watch out for other drivers I don't drive a big rig but have a lot of respect for them that job is dangerioun ,

There should be a device that measures your reaction time before the car will start. It should be in all cars and it would prevent people who are impaired by drink, drugs, old age, fatigue, emotional distress or anything else from starting the car. It would stop young and old.

I do not think this is in the works yet but its the best idea around.

I really wish there was some kind of mandatory driving and vision test required starting at 60 or 65, many people at that age might still be good drivers, but many are not. If they can't afford a fee to have a test every few years after that, then they can't afford to drive anyway.

I totally agree. I believe all of us had been into very close accidents due to these stupid people!!. Just the other day that happened to me, I was driving on the freeway 65mph, I was behind a car, on my close right side ahead was a big truck, with some kind of a space in between us, well this van came from the right behind the big truck and changed to my lane, with barely space in between, I don't lie to you but the were inches in between all of us...and this is at 65mph!!!!!!!!! oh, man where is the police when you need them!!!!!!!!!

I ride a motorcycle, and I live in an area with a lot of retirees. Bad combination, I know. I think they should make older drivers prove they still have the necessary skills to drive safely, maybe starting at age 70 and the each year after that or every other year at the most.

The older drivers will scream that it's discriminatory, but oh well. They like to point the finger at young drivers, which can also be a menace on the road - just read some of the questions here. Young drivers are learning their road skills and older drivers are losing them.

Shouldn't be anybody in a personal vehicle on the road. Buses could run on Bio Diesel every 15 minutes, or less, or more, and would not only help stop accidents by any driver, mechanical malfunction, cow crossing a road or spilled coffee, would also reduce Carbon Emissions by 50% or more.
Back to reality:
Driving is a privilege, not a right, any policeman will tell you that. Riding a Horse is a Right, or a Horse drawn vehicle is a Right. Most policeman can tell you that also.
Older peoples do lose some reaction and functions, that is a handicap. Handicap peoples are covered by more laws than you think.
I agree that some older peoples have lost the ability to operate a motor vehicle responsibility. Some have not. Just like children are the responsibility of the parent, older people should be the responsibility of the offspring that they created.
An old folks home, or retirement 'village' is more like a prison than a true place of joy.
Fact is you were ALMOST or NEARLY had an accident with a driver that you had the time to identify as elderly and not a hot piece of meat.
If mandatory retirement were implemented, then mandatory age restrictions could be placed on that privilege. 10billion a day spent in/on Iraq is not helping us solve any problems here.
So vote and tell them that are elected what you feel and what solutions you think are okee dokee.

There needs to be harder tests to renew DL. Too many accidents caused by old people. The car accidents are killing people.. Take license away so they can't kill anymore.
