That's OK for the US, but in other parts of the world, fuel economy easily outstrips US averages.

The overall average fuel economy for all US vehicles in 2005 was 27.5 MPG. The European average was closer to 40 MPG. Some small Euro city-size runabouts with diesel engines easily top 60 MPG. Last year I rented an Audi A6 Estate (a mid-sized station wagon) with a 3.0 liter turbo diesel and averaged better than 45 MPG, with performance similar to a US mid-sized gasoline powered vehicle.

We could go a hell of a lot farther on a gallon of fuel here in the US with only minimal changes.

1. Dump the road-hog SUVs. Most people never need that capacity, and they're more dangerous to boot.

2. Adopt modern diesel engines. The old days of the smoky, noisy, under-powered diesel are long past.

Just those two changes, adopted nation-wide, would solve our energy supply (and cost!) problems within one model year. Even if fuel prices remained at their current levels, the cost per mile for fuel would be cut to less than half. The rapidly reduced demand would fairly quickly reduce the price per gallon as well.
