Bostonian, again you are a voice of reason. While some of these people touched on some possibilities, I dare say that none of them know what they are talking about. There are two reasons that a car stalls in deep water. First, the electrical system shorts out, second, if the electrical system somehow miraclously survived, water would enter the engine through things like the air intake, and because water won't burn, the engine dies.

It clogs up the exhaust .....and the engine dies

Water causes a lack of combustion and friction. Both are needed for the spark plugs and engine.
