What do people think of the changeing the national speed limit (single carriageways) from 60 to 50?

I don't think it should be done, I'm not saying people who drive at an extreme speed is good either but if they're just gonna b reducing the speeds further n furtehr people are gonna get more n more bored so there4 more tiredness causing accidents, plus spend more time staring at the speedo then the road ahead, and its gonna make people become even more road rage, frustrated, boring which will also increase the amount of people who build up road rage and there4 reckless driivng will increase, i just think its all too insane, i know theres too many accidents and obviously somethings gotta b done and im not sayin increase teh speed limits 2 like 100+ or anything insane but dont u think the goverment just go too far wihtout any thought or intention on what they're doing or taking any opinion from the public and taking that on board as to deciding what 'really' should b done or change that we would all find reasonalbe and agree highly to

As see it, the majority of car accidents are due to folk who are not paying attention to the weather changes, which can happen in a flash!! Fog is a big factor. Why would you bowl along at your normal speed, if you cannot see what is going on in front of you?? If folk would pay more attention to the road conditions and changeing weather, there should be fewer accidents on the roads. I would rather arrive a bit later than risk my life, and others, to scoot along at my usual speed.. Good grieff, surely we all have a bit of road sense!!!!!!

We are so used to the speed limit of 60 mph that t will take existing drivers time to get used to the lower limits.

They want to police it with specs camera's. Its another stealth tax folks. It has nothing to do with safety, it about reaping what they can off the motorist. Camera's cost to install. We will pay for it one way or the other,

The accident stats make for interesting reading and this will not tackle the main cause significantly considering the outlay, if it even scratched the surface.

About time this nanny state government backed off and your local MP found a backbone.

Reducing the speed limit would be good for obvious reasons but you have to look at it in a realistic perspective. Changing the limit from 60 to 50mph would actually cause more traffic back ups. What this means is, when you are driving on the interstate and you are driving at lower speeds you would cause an increase in traffic flow which would cause delays in traffic. 60mph is a relative speed and changing it would mean many drivers would have to take time to get used to it and that would take quite some time. You want to have a speed that is conducive to traffic around you and keep the traffic flowing at a moderate speed.

It is another hair brained idea by this government to hit the poor old motorist again.

Having already said that the majority of accidents happen in 30 zones, and that Motorways are the safest roads, why suggest lowering the national speed limit on non dual carriageways?

Just like the banking crisis, they are picking at straws to find a justifiable solution.

Trouble is the current 60 limit covers everything from a 4 lane road with no central divider down to a single lane country back road where a 20 limit would be sensible. One size doesn't fit all, but just think of the cost of signing all the roads with the appropriate limit. As long as we have just a few idiot drivers who blast along regardless we will have to put up with this sort of blanket approach.

I think the major expressways should be modeled after the autoban.

It would need a new type of road and new licensing for drivers. The autoban has a lower death ratio than the american freeway for those reasons.
