What do the Lights on the back of vehicles signify?

What do the Lights on the back of vehicles signify?

Another lesson regarding the UK driving test. I made a bit of an idiot of myself in my last lesson when I had to admit that I didn't have a clue, so I'm endeavouring to find out. Numerous searches on Google and w******ia have proven fruitless.

Can anyone help?
Additional Details
oh bugger, that should have read 'another question', not 'lesson', doh!

By law there should be rear AMBER indicators, RED tail lights (for dusk and night time driving), BRIGHT RED brake lights (available at all times), INTENSE RED fog light, WHITE reversing light and WHITE number plate lights.

You may have two fog lights on your car but some only have the one. Same for reversing lights.

Oh, and the light clusters should have a RED reflector incorporated into the design for when the car is parked on a street at night. The headlights from approaching traffic will reflect in these and avoid an accident.

Reversing lights are white because you must have white lights fitted to the car in the direction in which it is travelling.

These are the only permitted colours for cars as other colours (Blue, Green) are used for emergency service vehicles.

Well there are brake lights, indicators / hazard lights, fog lights and reversing lights.

The Mr. Pine
They announce your presence at night, signal turns and braking.

You have 2 tail lights, which light up when you switch on your headlights for driving in the dark. A right and left indicator which flashes amber for showing when you want to turn, also if you switch on the hazard lights it is these indicators that flash, both sides at the same time. You have your 2 brake lights which light up when you press the brake pedal, these are red. A single bright red light is also positioned at the back, called the fog light, this gets switched on in low visibility conditions. And finally there is to be at least 1 clear light for reversing.

You may have trouble on search engines if you do not know the correct terminology for what you are looking for. It might be helpful for you to ask to see the owner's manual that comes with every vehicle.

This is a little booklet, often found in the glove compartment. It has illustrations of all sorts of things on and in the car, full explanation of their function, and most important for you, labels with the correct terminology, that you can then use in the search engines.

In the USA, private automobiles have lights on the back of the car, and some of the newer vehicles have side mirrors with lights there ... suppose our turn signal is on ... the light is also flashing orange on the edge of the mirror that is sticking out from side of car.

There are lights that are off for normal driving, but lit up at night, if car braking, backing up, then there are emergency flashers we can turn on.

Emergency vehicles have additional lights to indicate they are in fact certain kinds of vehicles, like police, fire, ambulance etc.

The red lights are 2 or more tail lights. when applying the brakes these lights come one to show the driver behind you, you are stopping, also in the same lights, is a turn signal light for turning left or right.
At night you have the same lights come on for night driving, with all the above.
You should also have 2 white license plate lights showing your license plate number at night. Doesn't the brits have a drivers manual given to you from your local DMV to study?
Next their is 2 white lights that will come on when you are backing up , when you put the car in reverse.
That should help you! good luck

Red:
Sidelights (the ones so that other drivers can see you in the dark)
Brakelights (come on when you touch the brake pedal)
Foglights (basically a really bright light so other cars can see you in the fog)

Amber/Orange:
Indicators (to show that you are abouts to move/turn to one side)
When the indicators on both sides are flashing on a car, they are called hazard flashers, and mean "this car is stationary/near-stationary and is causing a dangerous obstruction."

White:
Reversing lights (to light the way when you are reversing, they are illegal to have on when going forwards)

Lights that shine steadily are for other drivers to be able to see you in the dark. Lights that are not permanantly lit when your headlights are switched on, but "flash" when you work a control, are for you to communicate with other drivers, re your intentions.
