The only safe way is to get a good night's sleep, the evening before, and not spend too much time on the road in any given 24 hour period.
Coffee is a short term solution and will most certainly NOT substitute for sleep. A short walk in the cool evening air works just as good as coffee, but it's effects won't last longer than a half hour or so.
That's the reason there are law set up in each state, limiting how long a truck driver can be on the road, and setting a minimum number of hours of down time between shifts. Keep in mind that a sleepy driver is just as mentally impaired as a drunk driver ... and just as dangerous. |

if you have had plenty of sleep like you should its not a problem to do a driving shift. its like your day at work. you hear alot of people say that truckers use dope , meth etc. some maybe do but the majority of those are long gone. the industry has changed and if you work for a company they have drug test policy and rules just like any employer. to much liability and insurance costs these days. |

Some use sleep, some use caffeine, some use speed, some use loud music, talk radio and books on tape or CD. The ones that use speed are the minority by far, but professional truck drivers are individuals and in any industry there are a few druggies. |

Coffee/Mt.Dew along with a few NoDoz (which is just a caffeine pill). But, as a driver myself, the best thing is to get some rest. If all else fails, a 15 minute power nap! Put your pillow on your steering wheel (after pulling over), light a ciggarette (whether you smoke or not), put it between your fingers like normal and make a fist then lay your head on the pillow. When your fingers start to get burned, it's time to get up! If your refering to anything better than caffeine... NO! Our drug test are random and too frequent. And since our hours are SO limited with all of the new D.O.T. rules, it doesn't matter anyway. Us professional drivers being child molesting, druggie, rapist's is just a Hollywood thing. We are just Human Beings like everyone else! |
