What do you do if you are driving along the interstate and a tornado comes?

I live in Alabama. We have just been released from work due to severe weather and Tornado warnings. Schools have been cancelled as well as daycares all over town. I have a long drive home. I work in the city but live way out in the country. I am driving about an hour down the interstate (no ditches that I can think of) and then 20 more minutes down back country roads. What should I do if a tornado comes??

get in the lowest place you can see. or find a bridge or culvert and get in it but not if there is water in it or too close to it. if you have to run from it don't run at it or in front of it . go left or right of it and in the direction it came from. even if you need to drive thru someones field. .that's what i would do.

well if you hear the sirens, put the petal to the metal and get the hell home. But if you get stuck on a open road i think you are pretty much screwed. I hope you make it, and that you have a healthy baby

Here are some tips on what to do if you are driving in this situation.

In a Car

Ideally, you should avoid driving when tornadoes or other kinds of dangerous weather threaten, because a vehicle is a very unsafe place to be. If, however, this is not possible, stay as calm as possible, and assess the situation.

Your best option might be to get out of the car and lie flat in a ditch or other low-lying area that is sufficiently deep enough to protect against the wind.

If you do so, beware of water runoff from heavy rain that could pose a hazard; get as far away from the vehicle as possible and shield your head from flying debris.

Or, if possible, take shelter immediately in a nearby building.

UCANTCME

A culvert or a ditch MAY be a good choice if there is no rain, but if there IS rain, flash flooding may be more dangerous and likely than the tornado.

If you are in a car, and you can see a tornado forming or approaching, you should leave the car and take shelter as above.

You may think you can escape from the tornado by driving away from it, but you can't know what you may be driving into!

A tornado can blow a car off a road, pick a car up and hurl it, or tumble a car over and over.

Many people have been killed in cars while they were trying to outrun the tornado, and although it is sometimes possible to escape, it is generally not a good idea.

If you're on the interstate, I would speed up to try to outrun the tornado even if you have to drive fast in bad weather. If you have a good car and good tires, this is possible if you're a good driver. Or you can get off of the interstate and get into a ditch or building somewhere. If you're on a country road and close to home, you can try to make it home or stop the car and get into a ditch.
