What do you think of the 2 foot high white crosses marking highway accidents?
Find answers to your legal question.

What do you think of the 2 foot high white crosses marking highway accidents?

I live in NH. These white crosses are usually found up against a tree, on the side of a hill, on a windy, forested back road where everybody is truck'n a good 10 to 15 over the speed limit.

When did this white cross tradition start?

I disagree with the practice. It has nothing to do with respect and dignity and it has everything to do with common sense. That's what cemeteries are for. A proven tradition for memorializing the deceased.

For one thing, cemeteries are safe, unlike the location of the accident. If a person got into an accident at that location, having a cross, stones, flowers, and pictures is only going to make that specific area even MORE dangerous by creating a distraction.

The actual location of passing away is not important. It's only important that the person is properly memorialized, preferably, with the rest of the family, like in a cemetery.

Does it make sense for family and friends to journey out to the cold and lonely place of the accident? Absolutely not. I guarantee the person's spirit isn't hanging around there.

Additionally, what about the math here. If there's going to be a white cross at every single exact location we are going to have white crosses coming out our ears pretty soon.

I have family members in cemeteries. I don't need the hospitals and homes they passed away in to have a 2' high wooden cross out front.

I've given my opinion, what's your opinion? What am I not seeing here?

It is a good idea and its done so people might think and slow down.

I also find it a little disturbing. I have a drive of 24.5 miles one way to work every day. There are 19 of these accident site memorials along my way. I just want to see them gone as well. If people do not remember that this road is dangerous then they do not need to drive. There is a minimum of one accident every week on this road and it is very highly traveled.

How in the world do you know where a person's spirit hangs out?

I've always thought the crosses were a good way to show how dangerous a road is. Like the other guy said, if there's 19 crosses in a 20-something mile stretch, it's safe to say it's a dangerous road. I can't believe people ignore the crosses and continue to drive way too fast.

It's so sad that people have no idea how those people died. Maybe when others begin to see people ejected and rearranged and dismembered from car accidents, they'll slow down... It happens so quickly and there's not always enough time to minimize the damage or react at all.

A friend of ours, a police chief, passed away a little more than two weeks ago. Head-on, ejected, internal injuries... He passed in the chopper, not on the scene. At the funeral, we all signed his cross and it sits at his accident site. I hope that others see it and slow down. I know they won't, though. Maybe we should have mounted pictures of the unrecognizable truck on a billboard instead. Maybe we should just leave the totaled vehicles on the side of the road. Think that will work?

Anyway, back to your question. I've never heard the excuse "I lost control of my car because I was looking at that cross back there".
