What does flashing your headlights at an intersection mean?
Find answers to your legal question.

What does flashing your headlights at an intersection mean?

Does this mean that the person who flashes headlights wants you to get out of the way, or is he being courteous by letting you pass first? Does this have different meaning in different countries?

driver that flashes is giving right of way. it's an unwritten code of the road. could also mean u have high beams on, or u dont have the lights on at all.
u might see trucks flashing each other when a truck passes another truck. it's a signal to the passing truck that he's clear to move over in the other lane safely.

I use it to (hopefully) indicate that I want the other person to go first.
If it is dusk and the other car doesn't have its lights on, I may be telling them to light up.

By flashing your headlights, you are giving the opposing traffic the right of way...being courteous.

frankly you don't know. so let him move first then you can react safely.

Like another person said, some people do it to try and make the light turn green quicker. This is actually true though. In some cities there is sensor mounted above the lights that responds to a certain frequency of strobe. The reason this is there is because emergency vehicles have a strobe light mounted on the top of their vehicles that flashes when there lights and sirens are on in order to change the flow of traffic. This has been proven to be a much safer method of emergency travel.

As far as a person being able to effect the sensor is unknown to me. I don't know what the chances are of being able to find the right frequency of strobe. I have tried it and I can't prove or disprove that I effected it.

If someone flashes them at you it means they want you to go first.

i would have to say that in the US it means for you to go if he flashes you. In other countries I don't know.

Usually is being courteous.

However, it doesn't hurt to check and make sure YOUR brights aren't on as it could mean that too.

Some people seem to think that this makes the traffic light change more quickly....(it doesn't)
