What does passing on the right mean?

What does passing on the right mean?

I never understood what that meant no matter how many times I've read about it. So what does passing on the right mean and why is it dangerous?

It simply means passing a vehicle on its right side. Whether or not it's illegal and/or dangerous depends on the type of road you're on and the situation.

It is highly illegal on a two-lane highway, since you would have to leave the roadway to do so. You're never allowed to leave the roadway to pass.

However, when two or more lanes of traffic are moving in the same direction, it is perfectly legal to pass on the right. I've checked the rules in several states regarding this, and they all say basically the same thing.

Yes, slower traffic is supposed to keep to the right, but that doesn't always happen. It's far more dangerous (and illegal) to tailgate them. Wait for an opening on the right, go around, and be on your way.

It means exactly that...passing on the right side of the other vehicle.

If there is no lane there (ie there is a shoulder)...than it is obviously dangerous.

On a 4 lane or divided highway...its frowned upon because the blind spot on the drivers right side is larger. But it's not illegal in all states.

Basically it is illegal to pass on the right, unless you are overseas, but I digress. Anyway if you are on a highway that has multiple lanes in either direction, to pass someone in any lane right of the lane the person is in is illegal. You always pass on the left as if it were a two lane highway. It is dangerous because on a two lane highway you will be in the grass. On a multiple lane highway, faster and passing traffic is always in the left lanes. Passing on the right could cause you to approach a slower moving vehicle at an unsafe speed.

passing on the right means that you go around the car in front of you using the shoulder which is technically not a lane. It is illegal and can be dangerous.
