It means you go first if you have the right of way. Nothing to do with left or right.

Right of way doesn't necessarily mean "right" as in left and right. It just means you yield to them regardless of what side they're on.

Vehicle to the right always has the right of way. When on the highway vehicle to the left going the same direction has the right of way. When on an entrance ramp vehicles already on the road or interstate have the right of way. When entering a traffic circle the vehicles already in the traffic circle have the right of way unless otherwise posted.

there are established rules for how to pass by each other safely on the road, AND for boats in the water. I can't remember them, which is a perfect example of how meaningless they are in real life. Drunk drivers damn sure can't remember them; please PLEASE just if there's doubt (as you're a female, guys will let you go ahead of them a lot) just assume it's the other person and don't get upset or angry about it. Road rage is a horrible needless thing (to you-- it can ruin your morning or whatever and scare kids) and you won't care who was "right" if you get a dent in your whip.
If in doubt, just smile/wave w/e, and let the other person go. There's enough disputes in the world already! If you ever come to the same intersection as me, please, you first...

right of way is the ability to move forward without obstruction.

drivers ed 101.if 2 cars reached a 4way stop at the same time, one driver wanted to go straight and the other wanted to turn left or right, the driver going straight always has the "right of way"and the other driver must yield and let the car proceed before turning.

It means other traffic has to yield to you whenever you come to an intersection. So you go first and then they get to go.
In normal traffic conditions, you have the right of way when the traffic comes from a road on the other side of the one on which people drive. There are also certain roads on which you always have the right of way, regardless of which side the traffic comes from, but I forgot what they're called. Express ways or something.

In the US, the one on the right has the right away or the right to go first.
