It means don't fill all of the way to the very top of the fill tube. |

It means when the pump shuts off automatically, don't try to add more just the make it come up even. When you attempt to put more in, you increase the chances of overflowing and spilling fuel. |

To "top off" is to add fuel after the pump has stopped automatically. Topping off is not good for a car's emissions system and it is not good for the enviroment. |

When you are putting gas in and it shuts off by itself. You are not supposed to try putting more in. When it shuts of firsts, thats it. |

It means that when the pump kicks off don't keep filling it up to the neck. Reason being gas expands in the tank and can cause the fuel to expand up the return hose and ruin your charcoal canister filter that is part of the emmisions control that filters gas fumes. If gas backs up into it ,it turns the charcoal to mush and maybe your car will start and run like crap or not start at all. But you can still add enough gas to round off the amount to an even $ |

it simply means don't keep adding small amounts of gas to it,to get it completely full,it messes with the computer that monitors each pump ,and messes the reading up on the inside of the station sometimes if you do this, usually at the smaller stations that have older pumps is the ones it messes up ,newer ones wont do it,good luck i hope this helps. |

They mean you should not get gas every time you have only used a quarter of a tank or so, their saying to wait and actually spend the money to "fill it up" so its not a waste of everyone elses time... a lot of really busy gas stations will say that so your not in the way of someone who really needs gas... |

quit pouring gas when the nozzle clicks off, don't pull it out a
little and keep filling (sounds almost nasty huh?) |

topping off can cause a over fill that can cause a mess or fire |

do not overfill your gas tank. there must be some space for the fumes. this is a safe tip. |

when you put the hose into the tank neck and fill it up after it shuts off automatically from the back slosh at the nozzle
the first time stop
... they mean do not... just keep putting in a little more by pulling the handle again and again...
they are actually worried about a couple of safety issues...
#1) a person not paying enough attention to what they're doing can and they often do over fill the cars tank and the excess ends up as a puddle of gas on the ground that can either be accidentally set on fire... by someones cigarette butt...
or also could cause a pretty nasty fall because gasoline on concret is very slippery...
#2) also the more fuel closer to the top of the fuel neck the more vapor and fumes escaping at a faster rate...very slight spark can and will ignite it easily... a cell phone ringing to an incoming call has been known to do this...

it means to stop putting gas in your tank because it will start spilling over---do you have money to waste? |

don't keep pumping gas into the tank by hand after the automatic shutoff |

It means that you should always wear a shirt when pumping gas. |
