What happens if you get caught with more people in your car than it can carry (in UK)?

I drive a van that has 3 seats in the front and none in the back. If I let some people travel in the back where there are no seats and the police find out then what is the punishment and who is punished? Is it the driver or the passengers or both?

Please note: I know it's not safe. I'm asking just because I'm interested and not because I plan to run an illegal taxi service for people who don't like seats.

You are not insured if you have too many people in the car.
Any injuries to you or other people in the car are your personal responsibility, and any liability for others also comes out of your pocket.

I think anything the police might want to do to you is secondary.

As it's against the law, you'll probably get a fine, points on your licence or even your licence revoked, and then you would have to take your test again. I doubt they will send you to prison, but you may get community service. Don't do it, what if you have an accident and the people in the back get injured or worse, die, because they are not secured????
