What happens when a police pulls you over during a traffic stop?

does he physically check the vin ON your car OR does he just view the vin that is on registration and title only?

Normally the only times the officer will take the additional time of running a VIN check is when they suspect that the vehicle is either possibly stolen or the license plates do not belong to that vehicle.

They can do it by either calling in the VIN off the dash of the car to dispatch & see what registration number, owners name, etc come back from that and match it to what's on your registration card or compare the VIN of the vehicle against what is printed on the registration card- or both.

Once you are stopped, the officer will ask for your driver's license, registration & insurance cards. Usually the officer will then ask you if you know why you are being stopped & the traffic stop will proceed from there with the officer running a check on the status of your d/l & issue the appropriate citations (if any) & turn you loose.

If an officer is doing a VIN check on your vewhicle when you got pulled over, then there may be a vehicle similar in make & color as yours that they are looking for & needed to check the VIN on your vehicle to see if it matched the VIN of the BOLO vehicle.

During a traffic stop drivers are required to provide the license, registrations, and insurance to the officer, including allowing them to take it for examination.

It depends on the police officer if he or she checks the vehicles VIN number.

You don't have to consent to any search of yourself, your car or your house.

The officer will radio the dispatcher with a general description of the vehicle before getting out: color, make, model, and year, plus the license plate number before even approaching the vehicle.

The dispatcher will tell the officer what the plate comes back on. The officer may run the registration provided by the driver as well.

Depending on the severity of the infraction, the officer may even run your driver's license for your history: traffic infractions, criminal convictions, even going as far as whether you are a suspect in an open investigation or a witness.

ive only been pulled over once, i just gave him my license, then he checked the vin on the car

Sounds like you may have something to hide. Normaly he'll run your license # and plate to check ownership, insurance and license validity.

Well when they have a badge and a gun, they can pretty much do whatever they want.

Just remember to look at the video cell phone that a passerby is using when you yell, "Please, Don't Taze Me Bro"............

let's just say i've been pulled over a few times (like 15) and i have never seen a cop check out my vin in either place. usually just license and proof of insurance. i guess it depends on where you live and their practices.
