What happnes if you weld with out a mask?

What type of welding?

I have done Arc and MiG you would get serious retina burn and probably splattered with molten weld material. That hurts cover your arms and legs too.

Get a good mask dude one of those ones that darken automatically so you don't have to keep taking it off to inspcect your work.

I have honestly met a guy who is blind in one eye cos the weld spat into his eye it ain't worth messing around with.

I feel for you buckshot, I've done it before. It can happen by just working near someone else who is welding. You wake up in the night with you eyes watering severely and it hurts a lot. There are a few home remedies I've heard about, but I recommend getting a friend to drive you to the nearest er. They put stuff on your eyes that feels good. Most of all, don't let it happen again!!!

Your eyes will feel like you have sand in them. You will have white spots when you close your eyes. If they do, see an ophthalmologist as quickly as possible or go to the emergency room. Have someone else drive you, it is not safe for do to drive.

Arc welding
It will burn your retinas out and you will go blind in very short order. You will get a very bad sunburn from prolonged exposure. Don't worry about the sunburn, you will be blind before that happens.

Gas weld (brazing)
less chance of going blind. sunspots or snow blindness is what this can be compared to.

Seeing that you have consumed a extra bowl of stupid for asking a question like this, a good welder never welds without his/her hood. You should try welding on a gas tank, half full of gasoline,that will ruin your day,the longest of your life.

The welding flash is SOOOO bright that it "burns" the eyes.
Depending on conditions, it might be that the eye took time to react to the burn and as such seems like sleep contributed to the problem.
I do weld and I have been "burned". It won't happen again.
Do not weld without a shield.
Daredevil could get away with being blind. It scares the Hell out of the rest of us.

u will get color blinded first and then you will get blind that is physiologically , physically , a piece of iron might hit your eye ..

Well, first of all I can't find any reason for a person to be welding while they are asleep.

My husband is a welder and you can burn your eyes. They will feel like they have sand in them. He gets it sometimes even though he wears a hood. He has others working beside him and the flash from theirs sometimes affects him when he might have his hood off.

Back in the '80s, I saw shipyard welders working without shields. They scoffed at the very idea.

Pain while you sleep. Potatoes over the eyes help. Please always wear proper eye protection.

You will flash burn -severe sunburn- your eyes. This is a very painful condition and most unpleasant. You will not soon forget the incident and most likely will never allow a repeat.

I think not having a mask would be the least of your problems if you were able to weld while you sleep........... you're eyes would be closed anyways so it wouldn't matter

You can burn the cornea of your eyes , burn your face and you can even get sick by breathing the fumes from welding .

Its called arc eye and if severe enough it will cause blindness its just like looking into the sun.

You will get a severe case of flash burn to the face and neck. If you don't have the correct safety lense, you will burn the eyes causing a horrific stinging sensation that usually reaches its peak after you have gone to sleep. You will awake, and it will feel like sand in your eyes.

Well if you are welding while you sleep then you are obviously dreaming. So, you will be fine.NOW if you do that while awake, then you will get retinal burns...

If you weld without a mask you will get hot metal in your eyes. Not only is this a problem but a piece of the metal can become embedded in the eye. This is very serious; the eye will become infected and swell - just like flesh in other areas.
