Find answers to your legal question.

What is a "right of way"?

I want to get my drivers license this summer and that is just one of the concepts that I really need to know about.

There are TWO definitions

DEFINITION 1. Right of Way Rule - This means that when two people come to a 4-way stop at the same time, the person to the right has the right to go first. (Or, if the other person is to your left then you have to wait for them legally).

DEFINITION 2. Construction Right of Way - When a road is being designed or buildt by a Government agency the land in which it is constructed is known as a "right of way".

Just like it sounds. Who has the right to be there and who is wrong and caused the accident.

It means you have the right to drive if you have stopped first at a stop street and another car has stopped at the opposite stop.

The right of way is...When u are on a road and lets say you are at a stop sign and there is a car coming into the intersection and they do not have a stop sign.U must not go before they are clear of the intersection because they have "the right of way".

Its when oncoming traffic has the right of way. In other words if you hit a car while merging on to the highway it will be your fault because the other cars have the right to be in the lane before you do.....

Which driver is supposed to go first...

At a red light traffic going straight generally has the "right of way" over traffic that is turning left.

It's like, "gets to go first and you're not allowed to run into them."

Like, a person walking in a crosswalk ALWAYS has the "right of way," that is, even if you're barreling down the street, you have to slam on the brakes, because if you hit the person, it's YOUR FAULT! They have the "right" to get in your "way".

So, if you're at a four-way stop - that is, two streets cross and there's a stop sign on each corner, the person to your rght has the "right of way".

If there's no one to your right, and someone to your left - you are on THEIR right, and thus have the "right of way" - you get to go first.

A person turning LEFT never has the right of way.

Right of way is a legal term defining basically who has the right to be on the road at what time. When you pull up to a stop sign at the same time as some one else, lets say at a four way stop, the right of way in Oregon belongs to the person on your right. Therefore the person to the right of you at the intersection legally has the right to go before everyone else. If you are on the right of someone else, you would have the right of way. If you are merging onto a highway, the people already on the highway have the right of way, you must yield the right of way to them, and merge safely without causing them to stop, or slow down for you. I hope this helps.

Something to do with cars.

No offense but if you don't know what the right of way is then you don't need to be on the road. The fact that you're asking that question concerns me. I'm pretty sure I'm going to inform my children to stay out of the road...or away fromt he sidewalk for that matter.

When you approach an intersection with out lights. Either with no stop signs or a full four way stop. The right of way is the person to your right that has the 'right' to go first.

"right of way" means that one car or another gets to go first. If you pull up to a 4-way intersection and you have a yield sign, and the other car does not. he has the "right of way". If you are going through a green light, you have the right of way.

If you have the right to be where you are by following all the traffic laws, then you are probably in the 'Right of way'.
