If you are looking for examples it depends on your budget and requirements, however there's a few things you could look for that would give you an indication of where to start.
Look up the Euro NCAP or equivalent ratings for the vehicle in question. The more stars the better. This includes front, front offset and side crash tests.
As for fuel economy this correlates with engine size and weight of the vehicle. My personal recommendation would be a turbocharged diesel engine, as I once drove Stockholm to Gothenburg on half a tank of fuel in a SAAB 9-5 turbodiesel! (The SAAB incidentally being one of the safer cars on the road.) Look for engines with less than 2.0 litre displacement, and of course check the official MPG, bearing in mind that car makers are often a little optimistic in this respect. |

Volvo and Subaru are the safest vehicles on the road. Both are very dependable and get good fuel mileage. |

I'm not an expert on vehicles. Personally, I would look for something small but roomy to save gas. Moreover, I would try to find something that was not made by General Motors,so that I am sure that I would still be able to get parts for it. |
