What is a toucan crossing? i am doing my theory test on wednesday and have no idea what a toucan crossing is!!

"isitme"
Crossings have 'almost' acronyms for their use.

PELICAN- PEdestrian LIght Controlled crossing
TOUCAN -Car_man_ is right.
PUFFIN-Pedestrian User Friendly.
There is the rarer PEGASUS crossing, for pedestrians and horses.

For Trevor h, cheers, I'll bank that one for my check drive!!!

car_man_phil
It means both people and bikes can cross. Thats why its called 'toucan' as in 'two can'!

Toucan Crossing is for pedestrians and cyclists.

For isitme above...

Puffin = Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent

A pegasus Crossing is now refered to as an Equestrian Crossing.

type of crossing. good luck on your test.

pelican is pedestrian light controlled crossing.
toucan is two can-when the green light shows for pedestrians to cross then cyclists can cycle across also.
just a tip, ensure that you know your stopping distances clearly and another one that is being used an awful lot is coloured studs on motorways. Take care and good luck.

Technically for a cyclist to use anything other than a Toucan crossing they must not only dismount but must actually carry the bike over!

You do - but its just the naming of the silly thing thats thrown you!! Good luck.

The Toucan crossing is a crossing that allows pedestrians and cyclists to use the crossing at the same time. If a cyclist wishes to use any other type of crossing:

Zebra
Pelican
Puffin
they should dismount from their bicycle and then use the crossing. However, on a Toucan crossing a cyclist can ride across the crossing as pedestrians are walking to the other side of the road. "Tou-can cross" is one way of remembering what a Toucan crossing is for. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the crossing together.

As we can see in the photograph the pedestrians and cyclists will get the Green light together when it is safe to cross the road.

As with the above crossings the Toucan crossing incorporates zig zag lines to protect the crossing.

Zig Zag Lines

Zig zag lines are placed before and after the crossing to protect the crossing. There are two things drivers should never do within the zig zag lines, these are:

Park and leave your vehicle. As this will obscure the view of oncoming traffic when approaching the crossing.
Overtake. A driver should never overtake within the zig zag lines, as this will endanger the pedestrian who is on the crossing.
Zig zag lines are used on the following crossings:

Zebra Crossing
Pelican Crossing
Puffin Crossing
It's also a good idea not to park just before or just after the crossing as this could obscure the view of both drivers and pedestrians.

As with all of the traffic light controlled crossings the lights are controlled by the push buttons on the side of the traffic light pole. However, for this type of crossing there is no flashing amber light.

If we return to the photograph, I have placed a red arrow pointing to an electronic scanner, which has been placed on the top of the the traffic light. This scanner will scan the crossing to see if anyone is standing next to or is on the crossing.

For example, let's suppose someone presses the button and then walks away without using the crossing, the scanner would detect that no one is standing next to the crossing and therefore will keep the traffic lights on Green and this helps to keep the traffic flowing. Another advantage of using the electronic scanner is that unlike a Pelican crossing, the Toucan crossing will keep the lights on Red if someone is still on the crossing, which gives the pedestrian plenty of time to cross the road without the worry of the lights suddenly changing. This is especially useful to the elderly, the young and the infirm. Whereas a pelican crossing has a set time for the lights to stay on Red. Once the time limit is up the traffic lights will work their way down to Green.

its one where only two-can cross hand in hand!.

Its in the highway code under pedestrian crossings
172-175.
Tocan crossing and puffin are similar to pelican , but no flashing amber.

you mean a Pelican crossing you can see these in many place's they are controlled by traffic light's have large zig zac marking were cars and buses must not park in ,once the person presses the controll button the lights will change and any traffic must stop when the light's are red, taffic can procede when they change again but if any one is still crossing the traffic must wait untill safe to go,even if the lights are on green if some one is there the traffic must wait

bad bob
do you mean a zebra crossing
