What is safer: Driving with a cell phone or Diving with a bluetooth cellular device?

Neither!
But in all seriousness, I saw a man today chatting away on his bluetooth, and I noticed this interesting concept:
.
Driving and talking on a cell phone may distract you from driving, but trying to hold onto the cell phone might eventually make one uncomortable, so they would end their conversation as faster than if they were on a landline in their house.
As for the bluetooth device, one wouldn't have to fiddle with it allowing them to keep both hands on the wheel, but it would make it easier for them to keep conversations going on and on, ultimately distracting them from driving!
Which is REALLY safer?

a Blue tooth is safer. The point is, they don't want you holding or looking at your phone. If someone is paying too much attention to a conversation on bluetooth, then that person is just easily distracted. They would be just as distracted if they were listening to music and singing along.
Maybe cd players in cars is the REAL danger?
PS: Benders Game = awesome movie.
can't wait for the wild green yonder |

There is actually no difference. The person who isn't in the car with you demands more attention from you, there is nothing you can do about it. The human mind is serially wired. The tasks you perform in the car, from shifting, to braking, checking mirrors, calculating safety zones, steering, accelerating, etc, are all serial tasks. Talking on the phone is a parallel task, and, as such, takes some of the attention capability to open up a second path. The person you talk to IN the car is easy to put on half-ignore, the person you talk to on the phone cannot be put on half-ignore. The person you talk to IN the car shares the driving experience, and sees what you see, knows when to shut up and let you deal with situations, the person on the phone doesn't have a clue, and usually doesn't care that you just hit black ice, or are dealing with a drunk driver in the next lane. |

You answered your own question "neither"
Anything that distracts the driver is a hazard, whether it be a loud radio/cd player or a cell phone, smoking a cigarette or trying to get the kids to be quiet in the back seat. |

Studies have proven that both concepts are actually the same, its just that they are in different ways. Talking on the phone while driving basically is not safe or advisable, because its quite hard to do those things at the same time. When you drive, you need a lot of focus and attention, and when you talk to someone, you often lose focus, so its quite dangerous and its a hassle especially when your running on highways and you miss an exit. Unlike talking to a person beside you while driving is different. They are talking to you, but they can always remind you about the road. |

Both are distracting but I will go with blue tooth. Here is the deal. Blue tooth was invented with the sole purpose of not having to hold your cellphone in your hand. That way you would be able to talk to the person on the other end and still have usage of your two hands and multi-task. But what happens is many take advantage of this and the talk while driving. Now it isn't as dangerous as using your cellphone in your hand because when you have both hands on the wheel, you have more control. But the problem is the blue tooth can be a distraction too, because your focus is still inhibited by the conversation on the other end, because you are intently listening and drowned in the conversation. So it does help, but it is still a distraction because your focus isn't on the conditions of the road or other drivers. Both are deemed dangerous but blue tooth helps because you have both hands on the wheel and can maintain control. |

Bluetooth device, all the way. Why? You already said it. We dont have to take that extra caution to place it near our ear, and fiddle around with it with our hands...when both hands should be placed on the steering wheel for ultimate safety. Yes, conversations will go on...but heck, say goodbye! Its the EXACT same issue with a cell phone? Right? Bluetooth=much safer than a cell phone...although, for everyon'e safety, stay away from both when driving.
