Safety, is the prevention of unintended accidents and incidents by controlling the environment and the behaviors of the workers in that environment.
OSHA,,, deals mainly with conditions of the environment,,, such as guards, lock out procedures, chemical handling equipment, personal protective equipment, etc. These, unsafe conditions account for between 10 and 15% of all accidents.
The remainder of the accidents come from unsafe behaviors of the workers. These are less explored by OSHA, but several movements in the safety community have taken to address this. The classic is Behavior Based Safety,,, or BBS.
For example,,, the employees must work at heights. OSHA requires that the employees have tie offs, harnesses, training to use them, etc. But the safety of the employee still comes down to actually putting the harness on.... this is the point where BBS comes into play.
There are several schools that offer safety curriculum. In my state, ECU, and NC A&T come to mind. However, you can also get good information from the American Society of Safety Engineers,,, www.asse.org. |
