The car with the appropriate tires for winter (not all-season) driven by somebody who knows how to drive in winter. It doesn't matter if it is front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, more important is the balance of the car.
The absolute best handling winter car I ever owned was a 1976 Mercury Bobcat station wagon, and it had rear wheel drive. I had upgrades tires and wheels, and it was good on ice and snow. The next best, and it is pretty close, is a 1995 Ford Escort, and it is front wheel drive, again with upgraded tires.
Understand, when I originally learned to drive, I was trained in the winter, most drivers aren't.
Those that believe FWD is automatically better than RWD in the winter should remember that most American and Canadian police cars are RWD, and the police seem to be able to get around okay, don't they? Again, it goes back to the balance of the car, the training, and the tires.
Also look at many of the European imports and see they are mostly rear wheel drive, they are good in winter as well.
The best vehicles for gettin moving in snow used to be the old Volks Beetles and buses, back in the 60s and 70s, with a rear engine sitting pretty much over the rear wheels. With a low first gear, it wasn't too susceptible to spinning the tires. |

You'll want something front wheel drive, so that means like 99% of sedans. If you want to, and you are really concerned about traction, you can opt for a car with all wheel drive. Subaru and Audi are well known for their AWD, but Ford also has AWD on their Fusion. Many crossover SUVs also have the option of AWD and a bit more ground clearance. Cadillac, BMW and tons of others also have AWD.

Audi Quattro, hands down. It will leave most SUVs behind in the snow. But in all but the worst winter conditions, any FWD car with a heavy front end will give you sufficient traction. |

Agreed with Fred c.
Tires are the single most important thing. Go with a small sedan because a lighter car is easier to stop. Drive in snow in empty parking lots and intentionally drive aggressively so you can get used to how a car will handle.
AWD will be much better going up hills and getting going.
I learned to drive on my dads 1990 BMW
It had no power steering.
Rear wheel drive.
Manual transmission.
In 6 inches of snow.
This just happened to be the conditions coming home from the DMV in Europe. I slid 3 times, didn't hit anyone, and stalled out twice. lol. |
