turn on the air conditioning and make sure you stay COLD... nearly shivering! you'll stay wide awake that way. |

Pull over and take a nap or get a room. NEVER EVER Drive while sleepy. It's often as bad or worse then driving while intoxicated. a friend of mine was killed when he was hit by someone who was asleep at the wheel. best way to stay a wake while driving is to not be tired. |

I drove for a living for about 40 years. What I found makes all the difference for me is a 20 or 30 minute "Power nap".
It isn't the cureall, I know, but it can make the difference between running off the road or having an accident. |

The best way would be to pull over and take a 10-20 minute nap, it will make you feel refreshed and more alert. Or take along a friend and take shifts driving. If this is not possible, drink something caffeinated (coffee, Mtn.dew etc.), chew gum, blast the radio and the air-conditioner. If all this fails, they do make a caffeine pill called "No Doze" that might help a bit. Please try the nap first, if at all possible. You have to think of safety first, for others as well as yourself. It is better to arrive a few minutes late, than to never arrive at all.

getting enough sleep before you drive would help but if that's not an option try redbull,it seems to work longer than coffee. |

i read in the handbook that chewing gum can also help you stay awake while driving. however, it is best and most recommended that you get enough rest before you drive. |

keep the window open so the wind can blow in your face. drink some coffee or something with caffeine. listen to loud music. |

For me, cold wind in the face -- open a window. Note, my uncle was killed by someone who fell asleep at the wheel coming home from night shift, so please take this seriously! Studies have shown that being very tired can be as bad as being drunk from a reaction point of view. Pull over and take a quick nap if you feel sleepiness coming on too strong. |

I agree totally with the post of “gearnofear.” This is sage advice. At no time should you be tired and sleepy before operating any automobile, truck or any piece of machinery. I drove “big rigs” for about 6 years. On a long trip returning home late at night I started to fall asleep behind the wheel. I want to tell you that this was a terrifying experience. As soon as I could I pulled the truck over to the side of the road and laid down and tried to get some sleep. I didn’t sleep real well but I slept on and off for about 1 hour. This additional rest helped me and I was able to drive the truck safely for the remainder of the trip and I was only about 1 hour from my destination.
If you can’t easily detect the oncoming feeling of sleepiness then I’d get an alarm that you wear behind your ear. It will sound an alarm when your head tilts forward. This is a great safety device but should only be used as an extra measure of safety and should never be used in lieu of sleep. Here is one site that sells the device.

Don’t follow any advice that tells you to chew gum, turn on the air conditioner, drink redbull, stick your head out the window or turn on the radio. They will not work and I guarantee you that no responsible long haul truck will offer this advice.
As far as, what one poster said, that if sleep isn’t an option to do so and so. Sleep is the only option. How much is your life worth? |

Try boosting up your vitamin intake. Like vitamins b6 and b12. It's amazing how much more energy you will have. Drinking those high energy drinks will only cause long term effects such as heart problems etc. Same with too much caffeine. If you roll down the window or turn on the air conditioner you will still fall asleep. Pull over, have a 20 minute down time, get a device that goes behind your ear that beeps when your head tilts forward, never drive when you are tired. My brother was a long haul truck driver, too bad he never made it home. |
