My 5 year old girl (turning 6) is 41inches and around 33 lbs. Can I move her to a booster? We live in Los Angeles.

She would be ok by the state law because carseat manufacturers do put a lower limit of 30 pounds on many booster seats. However carseat techs (safe use experts) recommend a *minimum* of 40 pounds... and a 'best practice' use of a seat with a 5 point harness as long as possible. It makes perfect sense... race car drivers use a 5 point harness when they drive because it is safer!
I have a tiny girl like yours... about the same size but a year younger. When she outgrows her current carseat by height (less than one inch of shell above her head) or weight (varies by seat, my daughters is 40 pounds)... we are going to get her a Graco Nautilis. It will keep her safely harnessed to 65 pounds and then convert to a nice booster seat.

From grieving parents who learned too late how dangerous it can be to put a child in a booster seat too soon. Our daughters are older than the child in the video, but they are the same size as many three year olds. The accident she was in was *very* minor... she should have survived.

California law says a child must be in an appropriate, properly used restraint until 6 years old or 60 pounds.
This means the restraint must be used in accordance to the manufacturer's instructions.
This means that some boosters can be used by children weighing just 30 pounds. |
