A broken white line means both of the lanes move in the same direction, for example a 4 lane highway. 2 lanes one way 2 lanes the other. A broken yellow means 2 way traffic. One lane moves opposite of the other. |

A broken white line permits passing by going around a vehicle. When going over the broken white line, you will be merging into traffic that is moving in the same direction that you are.
A broken yellow line also allows passing, but the traffic you will merge into during the pass will be coming at you, rather than moving with you. |

yellow broken lines mean you can pass with caution and are only used to devide on coming traffic, broken white lines are used in traffic going in the same direction and mean you can switch lanes with caution, any solid line yellow or white means no passing and you cannot cross that line. you'll notice the broken white lines as you approach a intersection or traffic light but then they'll change to solid as you get closer, as long as they'er broken you can change lanes, but once they'er solid, you must stay in that lane, or it could be ticket time, butch |

A broken white line is the dividing line between traffic lanes, normally found on interstates, major thoroughfares or metropolitan streets. The lines are there to keep you on 1 lane only along with the other traffic for a smooth drive. A broken yellow line is usually found on 2 lane country roads. Usually these roads are rolling, twisting or frequently have some blind line of sight while driving. While a yellow stripe on the road means no passing, as a solid yellow line on your side of the lane, you can pass traffic where the road has only the broken yellow line going on the same direction as you are but with high caution and safety. |
