What is the first driving lesson like?

I have my first one tomorrow, and I'm really nervous. I have only been driving on residential streets with my parents. Would the instructor take me on busy roads? What should I know?

It's normal to be nervous when starting something new. You won't know your instructor and you might be apprehensive about his or her expectations of your abilities. Don't be worried. Instructors should be trained professionals who are friendly and are helpful and encouraging. You won't know the vehicle either because you have never driven it. The brake and accelerator may have a different feel to it than your parent's vehicle. Your first lesson will be given in a quiet area and you should cover basics such as walking around and checking for problems on the outside of the car (body damage, flat tire, broken light or window, etc), discussion about the inside of the car regarding the various controls on the dash, signal indicator, shifter, parking brake. The Instructor will probably then take you for a short demonstration drive to show you how steering and turns should be done. After this, you will probably begin to drive, learning proper steering techniques, how to use your vision properly, and you'll probably do a lot of right and left turns in quieter residential areas.
You will also learn how to leave the curb and pull over to the curb as well as a bit of straight backing.
Listen, learn and enjoy lessons. Your first lesson may seem a bit overwhelming with all the new information coming at you, but over the next few lessons, it will all be reviewed, things will be repeated several times so that you absorb it all.
As your lessons progress, you will also make progress and gain skills and confidence which will make you a better driver.
I wish you all the best. |

I'm sure if you discuss what you are comfortable with, your instructor will progress at a rate that is comfortable for you.
Other than that, I have no idea what city you are in or how crowded the traffic situation is there, large busy city may be a more complicated driving experience for a learner, but then again, you need to learn to live with the way the traffic is mainly in a 15 mile circle around where you live. If that includes very busy roads, you will need to learn to be comfortable, and the main thing is to focus your attention productively toward your driving, and make sure you aren't distracted by cell or MP3 or any other such electronics. |

Don't worry he wont make you do anything dangerous . he wont put himself in a dangerous situation. You will be fine . The instructors are highly trained and know what they are doing . have faith in him . Once you get the faith in him you wont be as nervous . the thought is far worse than the lesson. Just try and relax sit back in your seat and if you tense up tell your self to relax. Each lesson will get easier. You are lucky you have been out with your parents so have a little idea . If you are in busy traffic just watch that car in front of you and be prepared to stop. Goodluck. |

Your instructor will first drive to a quiet street and then they will ask you if you have any driving experience at all and what you already know, they will show you where and what the foot pedals do and how to change into first gear and reverse gear to start off with. The aim of the first lesson is to get a feel for the car and its controls, you will practise finding the biting point of the clutch, and how to move the car forwards and backwards. Your permitted speed will be limited to 20mph only at first until you can control the car at a basic level.
You will be taught all the other more complex skills such as changing gears, parking etc in the later lessons.
This was the routine I went through during my first ever lesson 3 years ago.
Goodluck and enjoy. |

hey. i had my first lesson 4 months ago. the first lesson he pretty much explained what everything in the car is called. they have you adjust the mirrors, and just basic stuff like that. my first lesson they only had me driving in parking lots, they didnt let me on a busy street until the second lesson. they should be really nice and calm so don't worry. |

My instructor slapped me and told me I was a danger to the road.
Ok, seriously, the 1st one isn't that bad. Be prepared to merge on the highway-they usually take you on the highway during the first ten minutes. He'll have you switch lanes at 60 mph with plenty of trucks. Whatever you do, don't hit them! If you hit the trucks you fail. After that they'll take you into a parking lot and you have to know how to do a 360 turn while your foot is on the gas. Make sure you don't light up the tires! That should be it. |
