What is the law about seatbelts back and front?

The Fat Controller
the driver is responsible for him/her selves and any passenger under age of 14. persons older than 14 are responsible for their own actions

Seatbelts have been fitted to all cars at manufacture since 1984.
UK seatbelt laws recently changed and look to be quite complicated, however this is not so, the driver is responsible for all passengers who are minors. All adult passengers are responsible for themselves. There are few exceptions for the non wearing of belts

All children must be belted and sitting on suitable childseats for their age and weight.

Pregnant women are not exempt from using seatbelts.
The lap strap should go across the hips, fitting comfortably under the bump, while the diagonal strap should be placed between the breasts and around the bump.

Like any other driver or passenger, pregnant women must wear a seat belt. There is no automatic exemption for them. Wearing a belt may not be comfortable, but it improves safety for both mother and unborn baby.

Children are exempt from childseats only in emergencies, or whilst in taxis or public transport situations. But they still should be restrained as best as possible.

You will be responsible for paying any fines at the driver of the vehicle. You should only carry the same number of passengers as there are belts. Some small or sporty cars such as the Peugeot 206 cc and the Volkswagon Fox, (as examples) only have four belts, and therefore you should not carry five passengers.

Seatbelts are free to use, and unlike a lot of things in life. So I always dispair at their lack of use.

It actually depends where your are. In NYS anyone in the front seat must wear a seat belt. In the backseat, people 16 and over do not have to waer them. In a Taxi cab, noone has to wear a seatbelt.

In the UK, all belts must be maintained (it's an MOT check). All occupants must wear belts if available, for a passenger under 14 it's the driver's responsibility. It makes no difference front or back. Passengers over 14 are responsible themselves.

There are new, complex, rules about child seats, but that's another subject!

The only reason for not wearing one is on medical advice, and you'll need to produce written evidence from a doctor. Pregnancy is not usually a reason.

Speaking as a driver, I won't move the car unless everyone is belted in, over 14 or not.

sp52uhh
in the UK it's a case of you have to wear them all the time,
if you're under 16 then the driver is responsible for your fine otherwise if your over 16 and caught you get the ticket.
It's also the drivers responsibility to advise you that seat belts are fitted.
kids under a certain height and age have to be sat on a child booster seat, some journeys you can get away without boosters, emergency/short unplanned journeys.
babies cannot be held in the arms of adult have to be in a secured baby cot caring thingy.
not sure what happens if the kid is 6 foot tall and only 4 years old, unlikely I know but...

If they are fitted you must wear them unless you have a medical condition that is supported by a doctors authorisation.

I'm not sure but I think you don't have to use one if you are pregnant

harry
YOU MUST WEAR THEM

Mazzy
You must wear a seatbelt in the front or back seats at all times. Seatbelts must be fitted along with an appropriate child seat.

Anyway, it saves lives people :D

Use them if they came with the car. And don't forget the kid's booster seat legislation too.

If they originally came with the car, they have to be in the car and they have to be used.

Hi, in the UK you have to wear seat belts at all times. If a passenger doesn`t put their belt on then the driver gets the fine!!!

Hope this helps you.

gecko
They must be worn by all passengers at all times, although from what I can remember, it is the SOLE RESPONSIBILITY of the driver to ensure that all back seat passengers wear one, but the front seat passenger is expected to take responsibility for whether they wear a seat belt or not.

You are also required by the law to ensure that all seatbelts are kept in good condition, so that everyone is safe in the event of an accident. etc.
