Minimum age you can take a test
You can take your theory test once your provisional licence becomes valid.
Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.
So, if you apply for your provisional licence before you are 17 you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.
For more information about applying for a provisional licence, please click on the link below.
Disability living allowance
If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday. |

17 BUT in some cases, something to do with medical grounds, you can learn to drive and pass your test at the age of 16..i didn't think it was right but it says so on the DVLA web page,
''Disability living allowance
If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday''. |

As a driving instructor can I make it clear that nearly everyone is wrong. YOU CAN LEARN TO DRIVE, SIT A TEST AND DRIVE AT THE AGE OF 16....OK EVERYONE GOT IT 16YEARS OLD, BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE FULL DISABILITY LIVING ALLOWANCE.
IFnot then it is 17 years old. |

To have proper driving lessons with an instructor on the public highway, you have to be 17 years old.
However, if you are on private land, there is no law stopping you, getting behind the wheel of a car at a lower age. |

You can if you're not 17, but only on private property (ie a field or something that you own) and as long as that car doesnt touch any public property when you are driving, its fine (so driving it to your field down the road is illegal)
you dont need a license to drive it on your own property. |

i used to live in countryside and farmers kids are driving about on their own land as young as 10!! |

its 17
but some companies offer head start programmes where you can start learning how to drive at 16 on private grounds its just the basics though like moving off and turning no reversing round a corner or anything
best off just waiting till ur 17 wastes less money!! |

you can start learning to drive the second you turn 17. you cant actually begin lessons on the road unless you have a provisional driving licence from the DVLA which costs £50. it is illegal to drive with a provisional licence without someone in the passenger seat who has had a full driving licence for at least 3 years. |

Think if you are on private land there isn't a minimum age, ( could be wrong though!) but if the child had an accident then you'd probably have some questions to answer from health and safety! Remember my ex telling me he drove his grandads tractor on the farm from about 13/14 |

It is legal to take HOME driving lessons from any age, as long as you are not in a public area. It is only legal to take DRIVING SCHOOL driving lessons from age 17. But that is in the UK |

There are certain driving schools where 16 year olds can be given lessons in preparation for driving tests at 17. However they cannot take the tests until they are 17. |
