Dont go faster than the car infront of you. You will get lots of advise, many people find out what works best for them and assume it will work for you. The only thing you can really do is go out and practice, follow the rules of the road and be cautious of the people around you. Once you have been driving a while it will become second nature. Keep distractions to a minimum. Don't fiddle with a radio, food, drink, or above all a CELL PHONE while driving. Do NOT take more than one friend along, as they are distraction themselves. Plan ahead. Look more than one carlength ahead. Be aware that the other cars may act in unpredictable ways and you must be prepared for any erratic behavior from others. Just make sure you are not one of the erratic drivers. |

Whether or not you can drive a stick shift. If not, then stick to automatic. Also, this is what I did when I first learned. You don't have to gun it as soon as your foot goes on the pedal. |

Probably the most important thing to consider are pedestrians. People learning to drive pay attention to other cars, probably because they are concerned about potential damage to their vehicle. Pedestrians are usually just an afterthought for most drivers. Pay particular attention to pedestrians coming from your RIGHT when exiting a parking lot or making a right turn at a corner. So many drivers simply look to their left for oncoming traffic, and seeing no one close, start their turn. I have kicked and dented so many cars that did this to me! ALWAYS LOOK TO YOUR RIGHT before advancing across a pedestrian right-of-way. Always grant pedestrians the right-of-way-remember you are enclosed in a two ton metal and glass cacoon, while pedestrians are simply human bodies perambulating through a world which we SHARE. Automobiles must ALWAYS yield to pedestrians, regardless of the situation.
Obey all traffic rules; they are rules for a reason-to save lives. Do not speed. Do not turn or change lanes without using your signal. Do not race. Do not allow distractions such as walkie-talkies, radios, food, etc take your concentration away from the safe operation of your vehicle.
Again: WATCH FOR PEDESTRIANS!!!!!
Consider walking or public transit instead of driving--you will save a lot of money and aggrevation. Be carefull. |
