I think all the answers so far are pretty accurate but with one glaring ommision! Driver confidence/stupidity. I believe in the UK young male drivers who over estimate there ability and control of there vehicle are the greatest danger on the road.
I have lost count of the times I have had to brake for some prat just paying no attention to what is happening around him at junctions or roundabouts. In fact one of the first things I learnt as a driver was to identify the types of drivers in the cars around me and adjust my behaviour accordingly!

The number one reason that people die in car crashes is because they do not wear their seat belts. 70% of all teens that die in car crashes are not wearing their seat belts vs about 52% of everyone else.

In actual cause of crashes the number causes is driver error/inattention, followed by speeding and then alcohol.

i absolutely agree with cupcake. she has the answers. i used to tell my sons when they were first learning to drive and i tell myself often that it is not me i am so worried about or them, but the other nuts out on the roads. you must always be aware of your surroundings and have a plan b ready to activate should one of the idiots on the road do something stupid which they will invariably do. it is called defensive driving. not in the fact that you are out there looking for trouble but you must always be watching for the fools and unfortunately they do give licenses to fools. it is one of my biggest fears because i am not sure of the statistics but i think traffic fatalities ranks way up there on the list of ways to go. praying doesn't hurt either.

its about time the government of this country adopted the Aussie stance "p" plates and not allowed to drive after 10pm,restrict the cc of cars that can be driven.
every young driver likes to show off wether male or female,look at me i am a prat,drinking,drugs,no insurance,no licence,no mot ,not road worthy,lights not working properly,rear passengers thinking its cool not to wear seat belts,loud music blasting out of up graded amplifier,the list is endless that every convicted driver should be made to bury deceased drivers/passengers/pedestrian's to try bang there heads to give them brains,we all know somebody that drives illegally,but do you do anything it?

I agree with the seat belts being # 1 but I also think if people would slow down and not be in such a hurry to get where they are going there would be less crashes.Also stay away from other drivers giving yourself enough time to react if you see trouble ahead.
