They usually use radar or lidar to tell how fast you are going, so it only takes a split second.
If they are not using radar then it is just your word against theirs. You could try to fight a ticket in court, but you will most likely lose. |

There IS no rule on this. They can pace you if they choose to, or they can simply call your speed by observing you. They can quite accurately do this by the way. The odds of fighting this and winning are slim. |

As long as it takes to go the same speed you are going, and look at the calibrated speedometer in the police car to see what your speed is.
If you are looking to beat a ticket based on them following too close, or too long, forget it and pay the ticket. |

There is no requirement for length of time, but there is a minimum requirement for distance.
In NY it's 3/10 of a mile. |
