4 seconds during daylight is my norm. At night I prefer the leading car to be a bit further ahead. I usually give them about an 1/8th of a mile. People out where I live brake without warning because of all the deer on our roads. |

During the day: for every 10mph of speed create one car length. 60mph.= 6 car lengths.
During the night it is not stated to be any different to my knowledge. I would still create more distance than Necessary any way though. |

Respectfully, using feet as a guide is not viable.
You are familiar with the 2 second rule? Pick a point, when preceding car is at that point you start counting.
1 one thousand,
2 one thousand.
If you are at the reference point before you complete "2 one thousand", then you are tailgating.
Personally, I try to follow a 4 second rule. Much safer.
At night, because of limited sight distance, I would use a 5 or 6 second rule. Putting the odds in your favor is key to being safe on the roads. Smart driving is safe driving.

On long trips at night, I find the brightness from the instrument lights to be distracting. I turn them down to a bare minimum. |

It is one car distance or two seconds (which ever you prefer) during the day. And 2 car distances or 4 seconds during the night time. Or more if you want to be extra careful |
