What is the proper procedure if your car ever goes into a canal or river by accident. Manual and auto windows?

...DONT PANNIC...
the car will take a good minut or 2 to fill up.....you wont be able to open the doors till the car is full as the water pressure wont let you....just stay calm,seat belts off,deep breaths,[watch for the air bubbles they will point the way up].....only when the car is full open the doors/window and swim up..

Avoid canals and rivers, mainly! Also buy one of those emergency glass hammers (only Â£6) then you will break the glass easily, to escape!

Open a window s immediately call 911 just say car in canal street name or area, then let it go, now somoen has a signal for a moment, so that you can get out, immediatly while water is coming in, undo all passengers, if its still water just undo their belt and pass them out the window, so that when you get out you grab and surface and return for more. If its rushing water a river, you undo everyone and pass out the window and grap who cant swim, but just one as you will barely be able to hold onto one peraon let alone a few. Drive safely, watch for bad weather in the area, and avoid roads like this as much as possible. How scary huh!!

Wait until the car is evenly under water, and then you can let the windows down. The pressure won't be against you then.

most of the above answers assume you can swim ! if you can not , getting out of the car is only the beggining of your troubles . hopefully it will never happen. practice holding your breath !

If you are not wearing your seat belt, you will usually be knocked unconscious.

If you are wearing your seat belt and the windows are electric:
1. If the windows are electric, open them immediately (before the power stops working).
2. Open your seat belt.
3. Unlock the door.
4. Begin attempting to open the door.
5. If not able to open the door at first, attempt to climb out through the open window.
6. If not able to fit through the window or open the door, keep trying to open the door. As the car fills with water, the doors become easier to open.
7. Once out of the car, swim to the surface and then swim to shore.

1. Open your seat belt.
2. Unlock the door.
3. Begin attempting to open the door.
4. If not able to open the door at first, open the window and attempt to climb out through the open window.
5. If not able to fit through the window or open the door, keep trying to open the door. As the car fills with water, the doors become easier to open.
6. Once out of the car, swim to the surface and then swim to shore.

Keep your head above water level until the car has almost filled with water, remembering where the door release is. The pressure will then be equal between outside and inside so the doors will open.

Don't panic make sure if the water is deep to open up the windows for you to be able to get out

First of all don't worry about the difference between power or manual windows. Power windows will still operate under water contrary to belief. As soon as the car has stopped it's violent motion undo your seat belt, wait for the car to almost fill completely, stay calm, open the window as soon as the water level has risen above the window, leave through the window and calmly swim for the surface. If you get disoriented as you leave the car you can let a few bubbles of air out of your mouth to determine which way is up. You can exit the car in 20 or 30 seconds if you don't panic.
