What is the purpose of driving with your headlights on even when the sun is shining?

no matter what you are driving, having your headlights on at all times is the best thing to do. There are many situations during the day that you are not as visible. When the sun is in another driver's eyes, or you are driving beside a tractor trailer that is changing lanes...lights on could save your life...

also, by always turning on your lights when you start, and shutting them off when you get out, less chance of forgetting your lights on and draining your battery.

Even when the sun is shining, riding a motorcycle with the headlight on improves your visibility to other drivers, and makes it less likely that they will do something stupid, like make a left turn in front of you, and cut you off.

They claim it is safer and that is why many new cars have the headlights turn on automatically when the car is started. One of the reasons that I drive with my headlights on is because of the law here that you must turn headlights on when in construction and since there is so much construction going on, I don't have to remember to turn them off and on!

I think it's automatic on motorcycles and I know it is on certain cars. Waste of a battery in a lot of cases but I have to say, there is an alarming number of people driving around at 6 pm (pitch black during the winter) with no lights on.....

With motorcycles it's especially helpful as most drivers' minds are somewhere else, and a small object coming at them appears further away than it really is. The headlight, especially the ones that pulse brighter and softer, really gets their attention.

It makes YOUR vehicle more visible, and, if another driver can see you, it is LESS likely that he will hit you.

Many cars and bikes do it automatically now.
(That was the only thing I liked about my old Toyota-the lights came on when you started the car and turned off when you turned it off and opened the door.)

Its just one more way to draw a bit of attention to yourself on the road. So many people pay no attention when they drive that every little bit helps.

They say it's for safety. But if it's sunny out most likely you wouldn't notice the headlights. It's just the State covering every angle for possible safety purposes.
