What is the purpose of having the different types of emergency vehicle sirens?
|
Drivers of emergency vehicles, in the UK at least, usually have the use of at least two different types of sirens (sometimes more) which they seem to alternate as they drive. What's the reason for this and does each siren have a particular significance or purpose?

There are 3 or 4 different tone and volume settings on the siren unit.
Some motorists tend to 'tune out' from sirens, it has been found that a change in pitch or type of sound re-alerts them. A change also gives an indication as to which direction the siren is coming.
It has nothing to do with the type of emergency, or the type of junction. |

A constant noise might not get noticed as easily as one that changes tone and frequency - particularly with car radios being on |

From experience with Police Vehicles, they have 3 tones . . 1. Is to be heard from miles away, i.e if your travelling down a motorway or long road to make cars hear u from a distance so they kow your coming its usually has a longer / slower frequency. The second is one you put on at places like roundabouts last minute to make cars aware of your presence. shorter frequency and louder. The third one is one you put on when theres more than one police car as the sound merges with the others rather than you all having different ones on causing confusion. Its a loud, fast paced one and is different to any others, it is also used at junction and roundabouts. |

The 'wail', 'yelp', 'two-tone' and 'tremolo' sirens are used in any combination, by all emergency vehicles.
'Junction horns' (loud klaxons, similar to train horns) are used by fire tenders and ambulances when they approach junctions. Apparently, these are more noticeable to stationary and slow moving traffic.
White noise generators (a loud static-like hiss) are a fairly new idea. It can be hard to locate the direction of a normal siren. It seems that the human ear can detect the direction white noise is coming from better, meaning drivers are less likely to obstruct the emergency vehicle. |
