Because every once in a while a cars ability to rapidly accelerate from 70 -100 mph can be a life safer.
Case in point
I'm driving up one of the big empty 2 lane roads in the West . I'm a little over the limit at 70mph . I'm coming up on a slow moving Class C motorhome . I legally cross a broken yellow line into the oncoming traffic lane.
I can clearly see oncoming traffic that's over a mile or more away.
I quickly accelerate from 70-100mph, get past the Class C and back where I belong and in doing so I spend the least amount of time possible in the oncoming traffic lane.
That's what makes it safer.
If I can't do that move in that manner then I have to back up to the point where I can see around the larger vehicle and everybody else has to back up and the result is a conga line of vehicles that are sitting way too close to each other for the given speed-and that's dangerous. |

Alot of cars have limiters that hold the vehicle off a little over 120ish. Some are fuel cut offs or tranny related goveners.
Cars are not available only in the US. Alot of countries have high speed limits, and speed limits do vary to around 80 in some places.
If it was limited to under 100mph it would be a pain to produce and extra money. Industry focuses are more on emissions than anything else. Sometimes people track their cars and what not.
Why would the government waste money to limit cars when they can not limit it, and have cops/court systems make money off our tickets. |

well, when they make the cars go fast they realy want the take off to be quick and the high speed comes with it. also because they dont want the car to use lots of gas they install a transimision that will help the engine to be on a low RPM and that also makes the car to go that fast. it just part of the package. |

Because its about making them go the speed limit quicker, not about going 100, it isnt fun to go 100, but to get there. |

So you want a car that shuts off at what? Say 65MPH? Some states you can legally run 70. 75. So a car that is sold in a 65MPH state should shut off there and if sold in a 75MPH state it shuts down there? It's actually not the fault of the car if it breaks the speed limit. IT'S THE DRIVER!!!!!! |

Some people like to race thier cars on a race track on weekends. Also what about cases of an emergency? What if there was a medical emergency and you needed to go faster than 65? |

Show-off factor. And have you noticed that a lot of people who have cars that can go 100+ MPH drive the freeways like Dale Earnhardt at the Daytona 500? |

To allow people to drive faster than allowed by law, of course!
Also no one will buy a car that can't top 55 (or 65) mph. |

In case of a high-speed car chase, you have a better chance of getting away. And, people love power. |

most newer cars will no go over 100mph due to a speed govener.
Why go fast at all? It has to do with the "I'm bigger, bader, and faster than you" theme that is very present in the world |
