What is the purpose of tailgaters on the road? Do they really think they will force the driver to go faster?

Tailgaters are stupid! Why follow a vehicle so close on a city road? You never know if that person will suddenly stop at a light, instead of running it, whether they will turn without signaling, something will run out in front of them (animal), forcing them to stop quickly or they are just a brake rider. Point is, you cannot force a person to speed up, especially if they are already legially in the slow lane and doing the speed limit. Just simply passs them, don't you think? Or did you install your own brakes in the car and am sure if that person decides to stop suddenly, they will work. Why take the chance?

I hear you... I hate those tail-gators as well... Just do what I do... slow down... Don't brake, just let you foot off the gas and let him tailgate ya... Of course, if you have a nice car I wouldn't advise it... Mines a piece of junk and I don't mind it getting rear-ended...

It already happened once... I pulled into a lane and this guy in a huge truck was way back there and by the time he was about 100 feet behind me I was already up to the speed limit...but that a** thought I cut him off and got right on my ***... Unluckily for him, as he was approaching me, I had to pull into the 7-11 (I am hooked on their nachos!!!) he was too close and his truck basically almost ran on top of my car... I did have my blinker on... Well, in the end, my piece of crap car had about a grand in damage and his truck probably had more than a few grand in damage... They had to tow his truck since the front wheels or axles were bent... And the cops actually gave him a ticket for following too closely... I'm sure his insurance company wasn't too thrilled... I had a laugh while eating my nachos... the cops took 15 minutes to get there and I was hungry!!!

You are so-o-o-o right. I don't think they think at all.
I was very naughty once. I was being tailgated late one night (no other vehicles around). He was flashing his lights as if I had anywhere to go (single lane) and distracting me from what was in front of me. So, anyway, I gently depressed my brake pedal so that my brake light would go on without engaging the brakes... My tailgater suddenly disappeared in a cloud of rubber fumes.
I don't recommend it though - he was FURIOUS and came back worse (horn as well as full beam lights). He eventually hurtled past me on a straight and then slammed his brakes on! Fortunately I anticipated that and backed off as soon as he passed me so no harm done, but I have to admit to feeling a little shakey afterwards.

People today are so impatient, that they want to make every centimeter of headway. They don`t want to be any farther behind you than is ABSOLUTELY nessesary. Not only do they demonstrate this in tailgating, but also in passing you and then turning as soon as they have passed. It is impatience, restlessness, and childishness all wound up together.

First of all, why would you pass someone on a city street?

And honestly, if I'm being tailgated, I just drive slower. I've even gotten down to 5 MPH before.

umm yes, it is a form of violence.
they want you to move over, or speed up. if you are in a left lane, you should move over, that is the law, but if you are doing the speed limit and it is only one lane, motion to the guy to pass you, and move over slightly. or if it is really bad, pull over. it's better to diffuse the anger than to get yourself all upset about it. it is a fight of wills, and the only way to win is to do what you can to solve the issue, and to choose not to be angry.

It's all about control. Give an idiot a 2000 lb missle on wheels and he thinks he owns the world. Always continue at a safe speed and don't let them intimidate you.

best way to deal with tailgaters is to slam the breaks on when they are so far up ur a s s u cant even see the reg plate. That way, they will be in the worng as they are too close to u.

try it

it works.or even beter still, slow righht down and when u make eye contact in the mirror, wave to them, and laugh,,,,,it will really piss them iff even more. Ive done that a few times.

You can control the space in front of your vehicle (for the most part). You can't control how close cars get to the side or behind you. Safety experts always say "Just get out of a tailgater's way". It's not worth letting their aggressive behavior get you in trouble (and yes, I hate them too).

They think you will go faster.

Well if they are in the slow lane I wouldnt tailgate but if they are in the passing lane I tailgate to make them feel uncomfortable and get over in the lane they should be in. If it is a singal lane highway and they are within the speed limit I wait until I can pass. But the saftey factor would indidcate that the person would speed up if they themselves didnt want to get rearended or they would pull over and let them pass. But people take the chance because they know the other person is trying to avoid being hit and though it can still happen it is a lower chance when 2 persons are trying to avoid it.
Just to help you in case you are thinking of trying some of the ideas brought up by others, you cant just slam on your brakes and then go collect your money. While it is there fault you have to have a reason for slammimg on your brakes. You can lie and say something ran out in front of you but there may be a passer by that says otherwise. Just because you are rearended doesnt always make it there fault although in most cases it does. If you slam on your brakes just to let them hit you , you can actually be charged with wreckless driving or inatentive driving so dont go causeing accidents or rather non accidents that could hurt yourself or others.

I hate tailgaiters! If i ever have one following me i slow down and if they get too close then i slam my breaks on! That makes them really mad ;o> But if they drive into the back of you, its their fault and their insurance that will have to pay (as well as your claim for whiplash).

I think tailgators think they are conveying the message that you are driving too slow and to get out of the lane.

Have you noticed how many of them are on the phone when doing it?

Sometimes people are in a hurry and there's some dip who won't go fast enough. Sometimes people are late for work, or there could be a serious emergency.

Then again, there are some people who simply feel comfortable driving that close to another car. It's rarely ever somebody just going out of their way to bother somebody.

Well What a ridiculous question. I personally believe that on a single lane road you should respect the other drivers speed (within reason) and overtake when it is suitable. However on the motorway there is nothing more irritating that some stupid **** sitting in the fast lane stopping others getting past. In this case it is also the fault of the driver in front. They should get out of the way.

jonnybeanos
they think you will be intimidated and move out of the way after you have taken into consideration all the ifs buts and maybes of your question. They are inconsiderate, i would just pull in and let them pass by and then drive as fast and as close as i can to their *** and see how they like it.
