What is the real benefit of Cruise Control in an automobile?

A few years ago, my cruise control was stuck in acceleration. At first I thought it was cool, as I reached 100 miles per hour. However, when traffic came to a sudden stop, the fun was over. The brakes slowed the car, but not enough to stop completely. So, I literally had to weave into the emergency lane, and in a matter of seconds, I was up to 75 miles an hour. I jammed the transmission into neutral, and was able to brake to a stop. The engine continued to race, as the RPMs were totally amped out. I just cut the engine and called Triple-A. Dudes, when I got of the car, my legs were trembling. This was one of the most scariest things that ever happened to me in a car. I will never use cruise control again. Is there really a benefit to cruise control? What, are people so lazy that they can't keep their foot on the accelerator?

c'mon... I have driven 12 hours straight before.. without Cruise control. What are you guys talking about? Is the gas pedal in your car attached to a pulley with a hundred pound weight? You guys are wimps!

For long trips, keeping constant pressure on the pedal is difficult. As a comparison, pick up a glass of water and hold it in your hand and hold it 1 inch above your desk... now hold it like that for 4 hours... you see what I mean? Holding down the accelerator for a short period, up to an hour or so, isn't hard. Even if it's in traffic, the fact you're braking, and moving your foot around, it allows the muscles to relax. But on a cross-country drive, holding the pedal in the exact same spot for hours upon hours is very fatiguing. |
