What is the reasoning behind putting a smaller baby's carseat backwards in the car...?

I know its a safety thing but what does it do?

A young child's head is 25% of their weight. An adult's is 6% of their weight. In a crash where an adult would get whiplash... the small child would be 'internally decapitated' (their spine rips in two) because of the added weight.

Many people think that if their child has 'good head control' it is safe to turn them forward facing... but you can't control your head being tossed forward in a collision and neither can your child.

This site explains all this much more fully: http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/stayrearfacing.aspx
It include crash test footage that shows how much less movement/stress there is when a child is riding rearfacing.

Hope that helps!

It's to keep their head from snapping forward, in a 30mph+ crash they could have spinal injuries otherwise.

the car seat supports the neck and head in a crash.

whatever the speed of the car was at the time of the crash is the speed the baby's head will still be travelling for a short time after.

by facing rear, the head is prevented from being thrown into their chest, breaking their neck.

uses the natural force to save the kid. most accidents are from the front-if the baby was facing forward he has a greater chance of injuries

It is my understanding that it is to protect the baby, by having their back turned from potential danger (head on collision- flying debris)

Also - Newer cars are equipped with airbags which could suffocate
the baby while they are facing forward.

Hope this helps and remember

if its in the front seat and the car has air safety bags and the child was facing front ways the force would kill the child instantly. another reason why children should always be in the back of the car

the reason is there is a shorter distanc the baby can in a collision.but the other being and most parents dont think about. is the baby,s face is in the best line of vision possible for the driver to see that the child is ok. so minimising there glance away from the road.,,,,,think about it,,,kitt the instructor,,,,happy and safe motoring.
