SUV (for weather reasons) A Honda CR-V or Hundai
for a sedan, anything made by hundai after 2000 or so, Toyota Cam. is also fairly safe |

Get a big Ford Crown Victoria. They're extremely reliable, safe (cops use 'em), and decent on gas. |

All cars have to meet certain safety standards before they can be sold ..
some cars exceed this but the cost factor may not be worth the couple miles per hour in crash tests ..
And the biggest car isn't always the safest .. Someone asked this question a while ago and in my research Honda came up as one of the most popular picks as did some models of Toyota ....Volvo has always ranked up there as one of the safest .. but again were if your looking at at any particular price range ... well its up there Audi , Mercedes , lexis all have decent ratings but again $$$$$ and for a first car I would imagine you want to keep it simple ..
I would stay away from SUV's .. due to the fact that most have problems staying upright in a collision ..

I would suggest you check with your insurance company .. they can supply you with what they feel are the safest cars ..and go from there ..
remind the 16 year old that driving is a privilege not a right ..
and keep her off the cell phone whilel driving ....
but even a Bradley tank is only as safe as the person driving it .
.oh did I mention Saturn .. they have a decent rating too ... and and they do have great customer service .. |

If you are looking to get a safe car for a reasonable price, I recommend the following four-door sedan models. The weight and size of these cars provide protection in a crash. I'll never drive anything smaller than a full-size four door sedan.
