It varies from state to state. Most are 20 or 25, TX is 20 unless otherwise posted. AZ used to be 15 and may well still be.

It is 20 on the neighborhood (side) streets and 25 on the state hyws/ junction roads next to a school. Go back to where you got ticketed and check, there should be a sign. You could appeal it but your chances aren't very good being your word against the cops in a school zone. |

In Texas it is 20mph. Although 28 isn't that fast. I wouldn't want people going fast where there are kids. It hard to forget it is school zone time. Sorry you got a ticket. We are all guilty of speeding on school zones once in a while. |

Unless you can prove you weren't going 28, you have a ticket to pay. The limits vary from 20 mph to 25 mph. I suggest if you got one for doing 28, your limit might have been 20 mph, which is the limit in Manitoba. What city/state/province did you get the ticket in? And why aren't you in the habit of checking your speedometer so you can say you KNOW what speed you were going, not that you are sure. |

It depends on the jurisdiction/state. Traditionally speed limits in school zones are much lower than on regular streets and/or highways.
In NYC, the maximum speed limit on any NYC highway is 50mph. On the NYC streets, the maximum speed limit is 30mph unless otherwise posted.
The speed limits in school zones range between 15mph & 20mph. Also, suspensions can occur with 2 speeds in this or a work zone as opposed to the usual 3 speeds in an 18-month period. |

20 MPH is the legal speed limit in a school zone. Police officers can and should ticket anyone for speeding in a school zone even if you are only going 1 MPH above the speed limit. |
