ABS - Antilocking Braking System prevents the wheels from locking causing the vehicle to either slide or skid out. The system pulsates the pads or shoes of the brakes providing the wheels to still rotate at a slowing rate, maintaining traction and steering control during hard braking.
During hard braking the break pedal with pulsate rapidly - that is the ABS activating. Just keep firm pressure on the pedal and the car with stop in an reasonable stopping distance.
Cars without ABS will slide when the wheels lock rendering the steering non-effective and stop beyond the stopping distance. |

Not everyone can properly control brakelock in a STREET car. ABS is perfectly fine on the street, the track is a different story. |

Prevents the brakes locking up, Traction is only gained through moving wheels, so you can still control the car while stopping.
ABS also indevidually controls the braking of each tire - so it can apply however much breaking to each tire. |

ABS = Anti-lock Braking System
Basically it is an electronic / mechanical (mostly electronic these days) system that stops the wheels from locking up when you slam the brakes on in an emergency.
Quote from Wikipedia:
"The purpose of this is twofold: to allow the driver to maintain steering control under heavy braking and, in most situations, to shorten braking distances (by allowing the driver to hit the brake fully without the fear of skidding or loss of control). Disadvantages of the system include increased braking distances under certain conditions and the creation of a "false sense of security" among drivers who don't understand the operation and limitations of ABS."
.... and back to my own description......
Takes the place of old fashioned human operated alternatives, such as "cadence braking".
If you know how to use ABS right, it can get you out of trouble...... if you don't, then in some situations it can actually make the situation worse.

ABS STANDS FOR ANT-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM IT PREVENTS THE BRAKES FROM LOCKING DURING HARD BRAKING SITUATIONS. THE MASTER CYLINDER HAS A PULSING MECHANISM THAT OPENS AND CLOSES VERY FAST THUS PREVENTING THE PADS FROM CLOSING ALL AT ONCE, CALLED LOCKING. |
