Getting into a car for a person who has been
housebound because of a disability is like
being free,not waiting on the beck and call of others,
being able to shop,ride into the country,visit friends
loved one`s again.All this after loosing your legs
in defending this country of ours.
Would you or anyone else begrudge disabled
people young & old of these pleasures in being independent ? Disabled people take a test for a
driving licence,the same one as all people take
in the UK |

Just like anyone else they have to pass a test, so if they pass then great, hope they enjoy the independance it brings. |

I don't see what you are getting at! I would appreciate you explaining.
My wife is registered disabled but to the casual observer you wouldn't notice as her disability does not make her appear 'different' to anyone else.
She is also a perfectly competent driver, Even more so considering some of the questions on this site!! |

There are many more injuries, accidents and deaths caused by young people driving.
I don't know why you discribe disabled drivers as an "issue"
If they pass thier test, who is anyone to judge whether they can drive or not ? |

If you mean a fully adapted vehicle for disabled people to drive, then no problem, they have to pass a test like everyone else...if you mean an unadapted car driven by someone with a disabled badge, then the same applies, there are good and bad like any other drivers. |

I'm disabled myself, and at 24 years old, I love the freedom my car brings. I learnt to drive when I was 17, just like the rest of my friends. I was still at school whilst learning to drive, studying for my A'Levels, and I faced a lot of hostility off other people my age. They knew that I couldn't walk easily, and couldn't quite understand how I could learn to drive a car if I couldn't move my left leg. They obviously havn't heard of automatic cars! |

I`m a GENUINE disabled driver. (Polio as a baby 58 years ago !)
I get all sorts of comments, and to all of them I say,
" You can have my Blue Badge, my exemption from Road tax, even my mobility allowance ( a UK "welfare" benefit for those outside of the Mother Land ) all I want in return is YOUR LEGS and the ability to walk with them "
I have just as much right to drive as anyone, and seeing how some others drive , probably more so, there are plenty who should be locked up in a lunatic asylum ! |

Anyone who is disabled, or becomes disabled through illness or accident (as I did), is required by law to inform the D.V.L.A. of the situation. It is up to the D.V.L.A. and your own doctor or specialist to decide if you are fit to drive.
Elderly people can carry on driving, regardless of whether or not they are fit to do so. |

I think that disabled people should be able to drive cars just like able bodied people provided they have passed their test.
I personally know a lady who is disabled and cannot walk without the aid of crutches. If she did not have her car she would find it very difficult to get out and about as she cannot get up and down steps easily, so how would she manage to get on public transport?
If being able to get a driving licence helps with her independence, then why should she not get one? |

I've know several and were disabled for different reasons but all very careful, good and safe drivers..unlike kids who are out in their new Mustangs driving 75 in 30 miles zone, people talking on their cell phones, eating, applying make-up etc. It's not disabled drivers we need to concern ourselves with, their at risk alright but it's from being hit by people who are doing everything except actually driving their cars. |

I think it's a very good idea - just because a person has a disability, it doesn't mean they're incapable of doing things for themselves, or that they should'nt enjoy the independence that driving gives them. In the UK, there's a lot of info about disabled drivers - Motability have their own website -

There's also a website for an organsiation called the disabled drivers association: www.dda.org.uk, among others. These sites should be able to give you all the help and advice you need. |

I think disabled peoples have the rights to drive as much as able-bodied person do. Given proper intensive training and safety precautions, they can very well perform the driving without any harm to passengers or traffic.
Design and safety issues for disabled drivers are a big concern now a days and a challenge for the whole transportation industry. And the safety norms need to be more refined for these drivers. For example, drivers confined to wheelchairs are legally allowed to drive, but safety standards for such drivers have lagged behind. Provided their vehicle is fully equipped with safety measures, a disabled person driving is as safe as an able-bodied. |

It's the same as normal people driving disabled vehicles: It doesn't happen. If you mean people with challenges driving, that's something altogether different. If they can pass the driving test, I don't have a problem with it. It has been my experience that people who overcome challenges usually handle situations better than those who have never faced a challenge. I think it's because of their mindset. |

READ MINE I HAD A COUSIN WHO WAS DISABLED
SO I WOULD KNOW...NOT BY OPINION BUT BY REALITY...........sooooooooooo let me tell you
it depends on how they are actually disabled
some don't have enough strength in their arms so they cant roll their own wheelchair they have to get an electric wheelchair...like my cousin.....and so i don't think disabled people will be able to drive cars until they have some scientist figure out the way they can....so......ya......i would call up my cousin and ask him 4 some more advice but he's not with us anymore (R.I.P)....... ::::::(

Provided they pass the test there is no problem but I would like to see a number plate with a different colour, say red that would give other drivers a warning that the person driving is disabled |

As long as they are legal and are capable of safely controlling a car then I have no problem. I feel that if they do not have the car under their control then it is unsafe and it should not be allowed . |

I think they should have someone else to drive them. Yes, some of them are still capable of driving. but why risk their own health and drive around?
The government should provide assistance to people who are disabled. |
