What kind of car is good for a first time driver?

As this will be your first car and your college car, you want something dependable. Seek out any consumer reports you can on any vehicle you pursue to make sure that other people share the same information about your purchase as your dealership does. Get a CARFAX report on any car that you're absolutely serious about. As far as makes and models, I've been a mechanic for years and have 4 kids myself. Only one has a sports car and she's an honor roll student who's graduating a year early! The rest will drive either a late model Civic, Accord, Taurus, Impala, or one of Mom or my cars. (they wont touch my Intrepid R/T though TRUST ME) As far as your first car purchase though, you should look for something with high fuel economy, highest crash rating and overall comforts. A radio w/cd player and a built in hands free cell kit has been installed in all of my cars for safety. And make sure you get the best bang for your buck. I've seen Hondas coming in for years to get basic maintenance done that have well over 200,000 miles on them. A last hint is to look on the road when you're driving around and see which cars types you see the most of. Those are the ones that are still on the road today and probably have the best overall reliability factor going for them...Good Luck!!!

Chevy Malibu's are nice and fuel economy is in the 30 mpg category.
Have 2 of them for my daughters.....been good cars.....

Dodge Intrepids are cheap and have great safety features

RWD is a no-no
Lack of safety features is doable...but if you can get that Traction Control + ABS go for it

Well your going to end up paying for the gas, so get one that has good milage. Your Dad isn't buying you a big car, but just know the bigger the car is, the safer you are inside. Check out safety features, not to insult your driving, but being a first time driver your lack of experience may put you in danger. Your probably going to be taking friends around so make sure you have enough seating. Mini Coopers are way cute! Bugs would be a good second choice.

A 4-door sedan model would be your best bet plus the insurance will be somewhat cheaper.

A TWO DOOR COBOLT OR MAYBE A HONDA ACCORAD....MY FIRST CAR WAS ACTUALLY A 03 CHEVY 2500 4X4 WITH A LIFT AND AFTER THAT I KEPT WITH THE TRUCK THING...I HATE CARS SO MAYBE A LITTLE GMC SERRIA
