What makes a safe driver?

What makes a safe driver? How do you think driving laws could be safer for teenagers AND adults? Should there be stricter laws and more law enforcement on the road? Does insurance need to cover more things for a driver? Do you think the courses involved with drivers ed. permit test and the license testing need to be stricter?

UCANTCME has the right ideas. I'll just add -
Use your cruise control, set it to the speed limit and use the right lane. Literally sit back and watch others zoom past you to either end up behind another car/truck, or be pulled over.
If someone tailgates you because you're "going too slow" according to them: put your hazard lights on. That lets them know you're watching them. They'll get the message and either back off or change lanes.
Look at the car in front of you and look ahead. If the driver in the car in front of you is turning his head/waving his hands while talking to his/her passenger, on his/her cell, dipping his head to fool around with something on his dashboard, looking off-road by turning his head or hitting his/her brakes when there's nothing in front of him/her - when it's safe to do so, change lanes.
If a person in front of you starts swerving - he could be dozing off - beep your horn and when it's safe to do so, change lanes.
When entering a highway on the acceleration lane-this is the most dangerous part of driving, IMO. Enter safely, but watch out for those in the left lane who've probably been there for miles. The minute you merge onto the highway that's when they decide to change lanes right in front of you, almost cutting you off-and some don't even get off at the next exit. Why some drivers do that is beyond explanation.

#1 - A safe driver doesn't get into accidents.
#2 - A safe driver's actions don't cause others to get into accidents.
I wouldn't blame traffic laws on many people not being safe drivers. I don't think we need any more traffic laws as far as regulating roadways as we drive. I blame the high number of unsafe drivers on a lack of up-to-date training.
How many driver's training courses do most people go through (at least in the USA) after passing their initial driver's ed course at age ~15? Most people NEVER take another driver's training course again, unless of couse they cause several accidents or break the law multiple times and a judge in a courtroom makes them get more training...
I think we could greatly improve the safety of our roadways if we made people take and pass a standard training program covering basic vehicle control and accident avoidance manuevers (doing so in an actual car with a trained instructor) before they can renew their license. That way people would get some refresher training on very important driving skills, that they don't currently get, every 4 years or so. |

Most driver's ed programs seem to place a lot of emphasis on skills, such as parallel parking. Skills are important, but they don't necessarily make a safe driver. I know plenty of people who are very safe drivers, but couldn't parallel park a Ford Expedition if their lives depended on it. When it comes to being safe, judgement is more important than skill. If you don't think you're a better driver than you are, you won't have an accident. |

best way to be a safe driver is to always give the right of way to others at all times, also defensive driving will always keep you out of an accident, always keep your eyes moving for the hazards that are around you, must be alert to others, and your surroundings.. |
