What makes snow tires so different?

Why are snow tires different is it the pattern or the rubber. Whats up. I have summer tires only on my car do i really need to spend 4 hundreds dollars on snow tires or is there not much difference. Just wandering!!!

Not snow tires but winter tires are better overall.......

Winter tires have special rubber compounds designed to improve traction, handling and braking in all cold weather conditions, not just ice and snow.

Winter Tires are designed to deliver safety and control in snow, ice, and cold weather conditions.

Winter tires deliver as much as a 25 to 50 percent increase in overall traction.

The more aggressive tread patterns and the composition of the rubber.
Winter tires used to be called "Sawdust Tread" (ask your grandfather or any older people) due to the fact that sawdust was used in the rubber compound to give the tires the correct flex and maximize their traction abilities in snow.

The tread patterns make the difference.

Yes there is a major difference. The winter tires or snow tires which you refer to them as have increased tread depth. What that means is the grooves on the tires are deeper which increase the amount of traction that you get in wintry or icy conditions. Summer tires would limit your traction causing you to possibly lose control on those conditions. That is why many decide to get all season tires because they are less expensive and you don't have to change them due to the conditions. All season tires are better because the traction adapts to the conditions based on the way they are built. So I would recommend purchasing those because they will be better in the long run. At the moment you have no choice but to spend because if you try to drive in wintry conditions with summer tires, then you won't get the traction you need to drive safely.

If your current tires are rated M+S (Mud and Snow) you would be fine. However if your tires are not, good luck in snow. The tires that came with my car were not and it only took 1 snowfall to change my mind.
Currently I have the set of Dunlops that came with the car, and I bought a set of Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25's. It is a night and day differences. There is no way I could have driven in the winter on the Dunlops that the car came with.
Anyway, this is my 3rd winter on them and still going strong. If you have the extra money, it is totally worth it.
