What must a citizen do to enforce a stop-light on a dangerous intersection?

Today I had an accident on a intersection where is prone to have an accident. Is there any step that I can do to make the city have a light to make the the traffic safer?

It depends on your jurisdiction . . . in the state of California, for example, there are various rules for the placement of traffic signals. Known as "warrants," these rules provide for the best placement of signals and other traffic control devices (including STOP signs and the like) that provide for maximum enforceability by local law enforcement agencies. If an intersection does not meet the criteria for the warrants, and a signal is placed anyway without some special justification, the likelihood of enforement at that intersection is diminished -- tickets written for violations of the unwarranted signal or traffic control device could be thrown out of court summarily.

That being said, it is best to consult with your City Engineer's office FIRST - they will know the appropriate remedy for the situation. If you find no satisfaction there, then try your City Council; oftentimes, if you go to the Council first, they will simply refer you back to Engineering or Public Works.

You might also research and see if your city, like my own, has a Citizen's Advisory Panel or Traffic Commission, which can help address issues such as these.

Drive safe!

do you remember that guy or girl that video taped a train hitting a big truck accidentally? . he was trying to show how dangerous it was when the truck driver misjudged the distance and got caught between a traffic light with a car in front and a car in back on the tracks and a train hit him or her!

Make a complaint to Ctiy Hall where you live. Tell them it is a dangerous intersection and have them check it out so a signal will go up. Also, you may want to get some facts from the police department about how many accidents have occurred at the intersection.

Sure people have the power.

Go to city council and state your case. How can they deny a request for safety? If they do put a letter to the editor in your local paper and get some support, then take your proposition to the city government again.

Contact the appropriate city agency that handles stop-lights.

In most states there have to be so many deaths occur before thought is even given to it.

Then it takes ten years!

Get a petition together and get it signed by everyone U can/know( the more the better) and then present it to the City Commissioner

bring it to the city, like city counsel and bring evidence and have people sign a petition that believe the same thing that you do

Here is an article on how one woman met with several local and state officials to get a traffic light installed because of numerous accidents in one insersections. Because of that meeting they were getting one withing 6 months. You can read more on it. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=11068745&BRD=1666&PAG=461&dept_id=14030&rfi=6

Here is another one where one guy sent a letter to the Department of Transportation in his ongoing effort to get a traffic safety light installed at a intersection, http://www.michigansthumb.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=16395889&BRD=2292&PAG=461&dept_id=499796&rfi=6

You can talk to your mayor, the city official, meet at the town meetings, and you can talk to the local paper. I wish you the best. My prayers are with you. I hope you are not hurt from your accident.
