What should be the legal driving age?
|
I Have seen on a couple of sites that they plan on rising the driving age to 18. What do Adults and teenagers think of this? I am interested on what the response may be. Additional Details You guys put up some very interesting points on this topic. I think we could benefit and not benefit from raising the driving age. I am 18 and I am not affected by this if it ever came to pass. I got my licenses at 16 teen as well.

Well let me just say that this is a serious problem. I have my provisional license (I'm 17) and I drive fine, obey all the laws, etc. I may speed a little bit but other than that I really just drive like any other responsible teen.
Upping the age to 18 is beyond dumb. Someone mentioned that you cannot get to work because you have to drive with an adult. This is very true and it makes things difficult.
One big thing is that if states keep raising the driving age, that means less time to practice. I understand it takes years and years to drive perfect and teens make mistakes but I mean yeah I have done a good deal of driving with my parents but I think the PERMIT age should be lowered, the earlier you start driving the better.
I cannot think of much else off the top of my head. No matter what they do about it there will ALWAYS be 17 and 18 year olds out there going 120 down the highway and crashing into 10 cars. Then there are kids like me who just want to be able to drive to the mall without waiting for their parents and being able to drive to work, etc.
For the record, I am in NJ and I have heard talk about them raising the permit age to 17. I don't think it passed but this is what I mean, its dumb. |

Well they are basing their decisions on statistics, how many people under 18 get into accidents and why and stuff like that. Of course there will be 16 year olds who will be better drivers then some 40 year olds, and it doesn't mean that once a person turns 18 he/she becomes a better driver and less of a liability. But statistically younger people do more stupid things then older drivers so thats why they are raising the age. |

I wouldn't mind having the driving age raised to 18, but the permit age should remain 15, because I find that inexperienced drivers are a big problem on the roads. 1 year isn't enough time to become a good enough driver, however 3 years would be adequate. From personal experience, I find teen drivers to be either overly aggressive or overly cautious, both of which can cause accidents and frustrates other drivers. When I was a teen, I was an overly-aggressive driver, probably as a result of my "superman" mentality; I felt like nothing bad could ever happen to me. That's something that I grew out of after I graduated high school, and I became a more cautious and curteous driver. |

Raising the driving age is stupid. They should be pouring these legislative resources into teaching advanced, safer driving as standard.
Variable speed limits depending on what time of day/night it is, and raise the speed limit on Motorways to 80mph.
Having MUCH worse penalties for breaking the rules in the first place, and have insurance companies greatly rewarding people who drive safely, as well as penalising those who are stupid.
At the moment, it seems to be war against the motorist. For example, why not use speed cameras to clock people who drive within the speed limit as well as those who break it, then reward those who are 'caught' driving within the limit with tickets that entitle them to cheaper car insurance. Use the media and celebrities to convince people that driving irresponsibly is a w ankerish thing to do.
Why must we always think inside the box on things like this?.
BTW - I drive 40,000 miles per year for the past 10 years since 18, I also ride motorbikes - so far, not one single accident. |

I think its stupid. Driving is a privilege and should only be taken away if you earn the right for it to be taken. right now if i'm caught violating the junior operator law, I can lose my licenses for just 30 days (first time) 60 day (second) 90 days (Third). That's enough for me not to fool around. I need to licence for work and school ( I do duel enrollment at a university, I need my own transpiration) |

People keep saying that the driving age should be raised to 18 or even higher. While I agree with this statement to a certain extent I feel that people are not addressing the problem correctly.
Age does play a role in driving when it comes to risk taking and things of that nature.
However, if you have ever attended American drivers training then I think you would agree that the whole program is a joke. Personally, I remember students my age sleeping in class the entire time and still passing the easy test at the end.
I feel that instead of focusing on age we should focus on what exactly is being taught to 16 year old children. |

It should be 18 nation wide. Then next and this is for real they are starting to talk about all of the unsafe mods that kids are doing to cars for looks. At last there is a light at the end of the tunnel. |

I don't think its right if you are a 16 year old teen who is responsible and passed the driving test you should be able to get your license and if you cant drive well then you dont |

18 years of age would work for me just because people at 16 years of age are still so immature and they don't care about anyone but themselves..... plus they cause more accidents than people 65 to 69 years of age........ |
