Change the oil and take a serious look at your transmission fluid before the trip. Make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended tire pressure for your car. Tire pressures are stamped into the side of the tire and can also be found in your owners manual.( the two pressures may not agree from the owners manual to the stamped pressure on the side of the tire. I usually go with the pressure stamped on the side of the tire myself.) As for the oil. Walmart 25$ to 40$ bucks usually with a guarantee. As for the transmission, a mechanic or a knowledgeable person that you trust can usually tell if it should be changed or not before the trip. CT to CA is about a 4 to 5 day trip depending on where you are going. Take a break every 2 to 4 hours, 15 minutes or so, eat a good meal before driving every day and give yourself a good 30 to 45 minute lunch break(not so much for food as to let your body catch up. driving long distances is very stressful.) Every day before you start driving stretch a little and check your tires, and fluids. This takes about 10 minutes for most vehicles and will keep nasty surprises from making your trip very expensive. Most importantly, PLAN AHEAD... Break out the maps, keep the capabilities of your vehicle in mind as well, (lots of mountains between CT and CA) Stick to your plan but be ready to rethink your route if conditions change. Good luck. Be safe.

Fluids, belts, hoses, and your tires. Make sure your tread is good and you have the right pressure. That's a long drive. Have a safe trip.

Check your fluids, recent oil change would be good. Check tire pressures, do you have a spare tire with you that is good. bring extra antifreeze. make sure you have a jack incase you need that tire, and the tools to change it. a flashlight could come in handy incase you breakdown at nite. a jacket incase its cold if you breakdown. some extra bottled water and maybe something to snackon incase of emergency. a cell phone and phone charger if possible. emergency contact numbers
